Hi All,

I have a Ford Indmar 351W v8 with a Velvet Drive Transmission (direct drive), ever since the boat shop did a service which included changing the tranny oil the engine has made a kind of rattle noise when out of gear? It used to be very quite!!
It seems to be comming from the velvet drive, any ideas what would cause this.

Cheers
ross

The type of oil they used maybe............

Velvet drives will rattle slightly when the engine is run out of water. Is that what you mean?

Re: Velvet Drive Transmission Noise

Every Velvet Drive boat I have owned has had a slight rattle at idle. As soon as you raise the rpms slightly (with the boat in the water) the rattle should stop. How smooth the engine idle's will have a big impact on how loud or noticeable the rattle is.

The coupling bolted to the flywheel is metal with springs that dampen the shock of gear changes.

Its louder than a rubber one like a sterndrive and we replaced ours when it failed from old age.

The springs started failing

tommays

Its a plate on the flywheel if they did it the same as the Correct Craft FORD/VELVET drive setup.

IF its bad its a sealed unit KIND of like a car clutch it just has to be replaced.

The hard part is getting to it to check it so i world rule everything else out FIRST !

tommays

Our boat is the same setup as the nautique(correct craft).
There is a little dip stick that goes into the velvet drive, but ours has no line on it for full or empty do you know how far the oil should be up the dip stick.

cheers
ross
