well after doing more searches and talking to different folks i put a hold on the 454 for now...still many ??? what about a stroked 454- that is a 496 right? is there any issues with manifolds, carbs, ect? i want 45+ mph out of this boat if i am spending the $$$. i can get a 496 long block rebuilt for @$3600. can i use regular454 parts to get this together? 502's are too expensive...different block i'm told.

You need to dump whoever is "telling" you stuff about 496s and 502s. <br />A 454 and a 502 are the same block. A 502 is both a bored and stroked 454. A 496 is a completely different engine. Also, I am sure that there are intakes and carbs out there for a 496 (8.1l GM engine), but it is not offered in a boat or a truck without fuel injection. So unless you get a complete Mercruiser 496MAG or 496 MAG H.O. you are gonna have wiring issues along with needing exhaust manifolds and a bunch of other stuff.<br />My official recommendation to you is: Find a complete Mercruiser 7.4 or 502 and put it in your boat. <br />And if that's too hard to find, rebuild the 350 that came out and use it as is, or sell it.

Physics works. You have X amount of weight (the boat). How much power does it take to move that weight? How Fast? You might have read on this or any other boating forum:<br />BUY AS MUCH ENGINE AS YOU CAN AFFORD.<br />Read the posting on this board titled: <br />"Looking for a little more power" <br />Another boater who will learn the hard way, if a big block will fit get it! I thought Sandpaperman's comment proves that physics works,<br />with or without gearing.

Just my opinion:<br />1st - how often are you going to go 45 mph+<br /><br />2nd - if you work on this boat yourself, you may want to ask yourself if you are going to jeapordize the space you have around a small block engine vs a big block. It sounds like the big block would fit just fine, but would you then have a hard time reaching a lot of little parts that are easy to reach right now?<br /><br />I just like the idea of the 383. It's more power than the 350, almost as powerful as a 454, but weighs less than the 454, and takes up the sames space as the 350.<br /><br />Also, does your current 350 that much of a dog? What would it cost to just have your 350 rebuilt?

The Rinker has plenty room for a 454, although it is tight between the fuel tank and pullys. I had a 95 model with a 330 hp 454 and brovo 2 that would run out at 45 mph wot. The boat had great hole shot and got about 2 mpg. This was a factory set up.<br /><br />If I was going to replace it I would choose the 8.1 Liter MPI with a Brovo 3 375hp. wooo woooo<br /><br />The 454 in your boat would work just fine and probably turn a 19 pitch + prop with no problems. <br /><br />I would not buy the 502. My .02

I talked to the guy at protec to get an idea of what this engine would do. although they sell the 350 mpi, the 7.4, and the 8.1l mercruiser, they claimed that in the exact same boat, with the exact same lower unit, prop, and gears, this motor would turn more rpm than a stock 454 330 hp motor,,, and get on plane quicker.their 325 hp rating is at the prop, not the crank. I would almost bet that if you bought a bare 454 for 4100, by the time you bought new parts exhaust and what not, you would have more than 5800 in it, and not have the warranty that im getting , or the piece of mind that the whole thing is new and fresh from the factory. but to each, his own

You are correct Tilliam. I got my numbers quickly from that Mortec site. The Mercruiser 377 is as you say, you can see though that there are other ways to get there . . . Not sure about that 383 thing they show on the Protec site noted above. It says it is from Mercruiser Reman?<br /><br />BTW I have a 377 and it pushes my 23 footer to 55 MPH GPS with a Bravo 1 and I am getting slightly over 3 MPG overall.

QC---If you call the guys at protec, they will tell you that although these are brand new blocks and components, the fact that they are bored by mercruiser to the 383 config requires that they be classed as a reman, although all the components are brand new.... thats one of the reasons that they give a 2 yr warranty,,,, and they are all hand assembled and fully tested.. i think its the best bang for the buck!

ok- we need a vote- either the 325 hp brand new complete motor w/ 2 year warrenty 383 w/ fuel injection OR the rebuilt 454 w/ 325 hp w/ 1 year warrenty w/ carb.??????? they both cost the same. the 383 easier to install and has better fuel milage....hmmmmm so what does everybody think???

While I Agree that a Big Block would Probably be a Better Answer,...........<br /><br />I'm building a Bored & Stroked big journal 1968 327...........<br />It'll be 383 Cubic Inches of Raw Torque,+ Fire breathing HorsePower.....<br /><br />Only because I can build SBCs for about, or Less than 1/2 what it'd cost me to do a Big Block,.. That I Don't have Any loose parts sitting around for...........

I think it comes down to this, how much work do you want to do? SB will be an easy install. BB will take more time an effort. How long do you plan on keeping the boat? Every time you start the engine, what thought will go through your mind? How many BB owners have you heard say, "I'm glad I went with the SB, as opposed to SB owners that said, I wish I'd went with the BB?"

I'm sticking with horsepower is horsepower, so I vote for the 383 as it is also lighter and that should translate into more speed too. The 454 bhp is at the flywheel, no? So I bet the 383 is actually 15 bhp MORE than the 454 at the propshaft . . .

Correct me if I'm wrong, torque moves boats.<br />I pulled the 260 out. Installed a next to bone stock MIE 330/454 750cfm Holley, Offenhauser DualPort intake, WOT: 4600 rpm, with a 1.32 to 1 Alpha I with a nose cone turning a two speed Quicksilver prop, 21 pitch, with a Land and Sea sternjack. With a teenager on board, maybe twenty gallons of fuel my 23 footer hit 67 mph (GPS) on calm water.
