I did the major tune up toady. I replaced the ignition sensor (P/N 87-892150A02) and noticed Merc made some changes since 99. My original sensor had 2 wires (bullet connectors, red and orange) and this new sensor has an additional black wire. The instructions that came with it do not tell me where this additional black wire goes. Does anyone here know?<br />1999 Mercruiser V6 s/n 0L091OO6 1999 Regal 2100 LSR<br />Thanks

Re: Ignition sensor question

You have the wrong sensor, you should have part number 87-861780A 2 sensor, not the one you listed. Your number doesn't even come up in the Mercruiser parts book.<br />Besides that, that sensor is NOT a tuneup item. If it works, it's OK to use. If it doesn't work, your engine won't run.

Re: Ignition sensor question

The desc of the PN is "kit-Ign sensor"<br />892150A02. My Merc dealer said this was the one for me. Guess I'll take back. It was original so I wanted to get it before it got me.<br />Thanks for your help!!

Re: Ignition sensor question

Silly me, I was using the Electronics parts catalog from Merc (latest edition) and the Mercnet dealer site to check the numbers. Had I went to their online Parts Express site, and typed in my number it would have superseded it to your number. However, by looking up the sensor number using your engine serial number I get my number with no reference to your number.<br />Is there any reason people end up with the wrong parts and information at times???????

I will see if it will run and tape off the black wire. Thanks again.

Didn't it come with an instruction sheet? Usually when Merc comes up with a new part that replaces something and has more wires, there is usually instructions to tell you what to do.

Re: Ignition sensor question

FYI- Goes to ground- fired right up. The new sensor has no metal exposed to make contact with the dist housing- it's mostly rubber coated (the old one was all metal), so I just had to find a ground to bolt to. The paper work that came with the kit says nothing about it. Guess we should know this stuff.
