I replaced all my fuel lines today and noticed the plug in the bottom of the fuel pump was still in. Called a boat shop were I shop at and he said it should run a hose up to the flame arestor. Do I just drill a hole in the base of the arestor and stick the hose through it so if gas does leak it will go into the carb? Thanks for any help

Re: fuel pump 120 merc.

The original had a glass jar that would fill with gas if the diafram in the fuel pump broke. I should have said it is a 1970 merc 120. When I got the boat it was not hooked up the way it should have been so I have been learning as I go Hope I explained a little better I will try to take photo tommorrow and post.

Where is the glass jar (Sight glass) now?
That part should have been re-used...
That's where the gas is supposed to go when the fuel pump begins to fail on older rigs....
I would not rig it up the way they are suggesting!
Are you sure you have the correct marine pump?.....JK

Re: fuel pump 120 merc.

It is a marine fuel pump I had been trying to find the original parts but cannot find. There are two types of pumps every one I have talk to said either one will work on my boat so that is all I can go on. But the way it is set up now there is no place for fuel to go except the crank case if the diaphram should break.

MRS not sure I can help.but I do have some info.

Originally your motor DID have a glass bowl attatched to the fuel filter. And it would fill with fuel if the diaphram ruptured. It "tee'd" back into the line feeding fuel to the carb.

Newer fuel pumps just ran that line back to a fitting that was actually part of the carb.

Some Volvos did have a fitting into the spark arrester for this line, but I don't think Mercruiser ever did.

At anyrate the purpose of the line is so that IF you see fuel in it .... replace the fuel pump.

If you plug that fitting, and the pump fails you will have an explosive solution in your crankcase.

Like I said No Answer Just thoughts. But do something you feel safe with.

Don't let me leave you with the thought that any of these systems were a solution. They ALL were telling you you and the boat were in danger.

DHP

Re: fuel pump 120 merc.

That would "Almost" work. What you want is to have a tube go into the top of the flame arrestor so when/if any fuel comes through the hose it goes into the carb just not empty out around the outside of the carb. Where you show it to go in with your arrow, at the base of the carb, the gas will just run out the around the outside of the carb where the flame arrestor sits.
I have silver soldered elbow fittings in the top of the flame arrestors before, just over the choke plate. and hooked a clear 1/4" hose from the flame arrestor to the fuel pump.

I guess that is approved RUBBER hose going to the carb.?It looks like a 2bbl carb. under the green arrow should be a plug in the carb.above the throttle plate, DO NOT USE the plug below the throttle plate. you can install a fitting there for the hose coming from the fuel pump.It also acts as a vent line so the diaphram pumps fuel.

Re: fuel pump 120 merc.

Thanks Guys Don I will go on top with a fitting.DHP you are right thats why I want to get it so the fuel will not go in the crank.BT I knew somebody would notice the rubber hose from pump to carb it is a GM 2bbL ROC. I did look for plug but mine did not have one I am trying to find a braid line with fittings some one had them for sale for marine use but I cant remember who had them. Thanks to all of you for the help :D

Re: fuel pump 120 merc.

You can make a steel fuel line if you have a tube bender and double flare kit. I just get a NAPA double flared brake line in 3/8" tubing. Bend it to fit, cut to length and reflare.
Make sure you get approved CG hose. Just being braided doesn't mean anything. It must meet certain fire tests.
