I have been reading everything I could on the bellows replacement.

I have basically decided to do the job but have a few questions:

1) should I replace the shift cable?
2) should I replace the gimbal bearing?
3) what about these bushings/shaft seal?

Check out this kit Seem like a good price?

If you get that kit see if thats a Link Belt gimble bearing, if not ask if they will replace it with one. They sell Link Belt and a cheapie.

Re: Bellows Replacement

The picture shows a GEN I bellows other than that i have seen the merc shift cable side buy side with and after market cable.

The merc cable is much better in IMHP its a tough call on everything else as to which might be better

tommays

Personally,.......
If I'm changing Any of those Rubber parts,....
I'd do them All at Once.....

The Gimbel Bearing is easy to do, without tearing into the Gimbel Assembley,...
But,.. If it's in the Kit,... Why Not change it out as well......

Re: Bellows Replacement

Hey Bondo..........

How difficult is this?
Seems like the hardest part is getting the screws out of the covers for the hinge pins, and the hinge pins themselves.

Where can I get the loctite for the hinge pins and the adhesive for the bellows?

What about these shaft seals? Where do they go? Kinda confused here........Are those seals in the bell housing?

Re: Bellows Replacement

I found the hardest part was the water hose

Its much easery to get the pins lose with the drive holding the bellhouseing still :)

you can get a small tube of red locktite almost anywere for 3 bucks :)

The glue is 3M ? 847 rubber stuff they have everything at down at the bayliner\trophy\maxum place on bergen point

i printed up the sections from the online manual it gives a really good step buy step how to and were to use each type of locktite and glue

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14notice.pdf

the seals and bushings are easy to change you just need a 1/4-20 rod and some washers to pull them in and out

tommays

Re: Bellows Replacement

Don't have to worry about the water hose as I have a raw water pump on the engine.

The drive is off. Now I understand why it is suggested to get the hinge pins free with the drive on.

Are those seals/bushings the ones depicted in the link I posted? Where are they? On the bell housing?

Re: Bellows Replacement

Like i said before it looks like the WRONG KIT unless you have an alpha drive ?

I thought this boat was newer and had an ALPHA GEN II drive which has the same BUT different parts

tommays

Re: Bellows Replacement

After a more careful inspection, it looks like the bellows are OK. What I thought was a problem was only the remains of the trim sender wires.

I also checked the gimbal bearing and it seems fine also.

I have done enough to this thing this year....if it doesn't need to be done...........I'm not going to do it now!
