Just bought 1987 Bayliner with OMC 3.0L. Thanks to your site, I know it is GM. Has not been on water for 4-5 years. Previous owner said that he heard engine knock last time it was ran. Have not taken pan off.
Reason for posting: What items do I need to check on the outdrive to see if I just bought a real nice trailer with some fiberglass garbage on it?
Thanks

Drain it and see if any water and/or metal filings come out! Hopefully nice clean lub will exit. If not. You've learned that B-O-A-T stands for Break Out Another Thousand. (Sorry to steal that line from someone else but I love it!). Hopefully you paid considerably less one would normally pay for this boat since you apparently have no idea what you are saddled with.

Yep, like stated above:Boat = A hole in the water into which you dump money. With that Obsolete Marine Corp out drive hung on the back maybe. If it’s just the engine your in luck. E-Z to come by and work on.

Don't knock OMC. It's a great drive that is still serviced by many. It's a much easier to work on and stronger built drive than the Merc Alpha 1. It's just that some Merc guys on here love to bash OMC's. Ask a Merc guy how he changes an impeller. Yikes! What a job compared to a Cobra!

Mine's a 1986 3.0 Cobra and works just fine. I have no trouble at all finding parts for it. (There are tons of these drives out there.)

As for your engine, it's no different than any other GM 3.0! If you have a knock and you know nothing about engines, find a bud that does and have him look at it.

Any boat stored that long with a black anchor hung on it will be an equal opportunity money sucker.
Just check the threads.

I know what he's got, and I know what I said.
Maybe this will help... any boat stored 4-5 years, even with a Mercruiser drive, will suck up your money.

It's not the drive that's the real issue, it's the time in storage and all the things that could possibly need serviced after sitting that long.

All the derogatory things that get said about OMC drives, there is a reason why Mercs are often referred to as "Black Anchors".
