Hello to all and happy new boating season. I bought another boat yesterday, which will be a huge step up from my 1974 17'.

I got a 1987 Sea Ray 19' with a Mercruiser 470 with Alpha 1 leg.

Also, this engine has closed cooling and I am about to 'summerize it' Any particular things I should know about this engine and look at for summerizing? I have never has a closed cooling system and never had this engine. I know all the regular stuff like impeller, points, gap etc. Just wondering about this engine especially.

Thanks.

Re: 1987 Merc 470 Summerizing

Ignore some of my earlier post. It looks like what I'm getting is a 470 4cyl, not I-6. I just thought it was by looking at it quickly this afternoon. I didn't count the sparkplug wires. It just looked so much longer than the 3.0 4cyl! the bloody engine's enormous! So forget the stupid I-6 ramblings. Otherwise, anything special I should worry about starting it up? Seems like the stator is an issue on this. Any way to see if the stator is about to go?

Thanks.

The first thing you need to do is get a Mercruiser service manual for your engine.
Merc PN 90-44553, manual #8.
As far as the stator, just like an alternator, they always look fine until the self destruct.

Already have it ordered. Should be here in a week. Any particular antifreeze that should be used for the closed cooling? Thanks.

Make sure battery is fully charged, check all oil levels(motor/drive),check A/F level.Check for spark first before you crank it to death.sometimes the points will scale over and you have no spark.there is a kit offered to replace the stator system if you have the room.

Be sure to use only anti-freeze that is alumium freindly and never use tap water only distilled water

Re: 1987 Merc 470 Summerizing

Anyone know the nominal capacity of the cooling system? Just asking while I wait for the manual to come. Also, there is a 4" or so diameter metal plate with a rubber gasket of sorts that seems to go on the end of the heat exchanger. It only has one flat head screw to attach it? Just screw it on, or any tips/tricks here? Seems awfully little to just have one screw to hold all that water back without leaking?!?

nope, just 1.but why are you opening it up?the cooling water for the exchanger is held there not the A/F.

Re: 1987 Merc 470 Summerizing

The mechanic that winterized the boat removed the plate. I just reinstalled the plate and will go ahead and fill with 50/50 mix. I was just hoping someone could tell me the capacity so I could just dump in the half of antifreeze and buy enough distilled. Thanks.

safest way is to do a 50/50 mix in a separate container

Sure, the problem is knowing how much to mix to put in the boat!

1 3/4 Gal of mix .should be close. you fill it up to within a 1/2 of the cap.

Unless im mistaken ,are you trying to fill the exchanger?the side plate the guy took off to winterize only contained the raw water side of the motor. On a closed cooling system its just like a car system. remove the cap and look to check the level of A/F in the motor now.

No, I'm filling the top by the valve cover. The plate at the front of the exchanger was removed for winter, but I just closed it up again. 1 3/4 gallons gives me an idea how much we're looking at. Thanks. It just helps to have some idea how much it holds. I had no idea at all, so just wanted to check.

Thanks.

Re: 1987 Merc 470 Summerizing

ntheyer:

There some things that are different with the 3.7L engine that you're beginning to learn. If the stator is not operating, or if you're not getting sufficient charging, it is more likly the water cooled voltage regulator. The stator and regulator combined are some serious loot to replace. Most of us 3.7L owners replace the charging system with conventional alternators...it is and easier repair than replacing the stator and provides far longer service and less headache, I wish I did mine 10 or 15 years ago. The conversion kit is widely available - don't pay more than $399. Search this forum for "3.7L" or go to Google and search "3.7L" you'll find lots of info.

Also important is the lower unit impeller, it is the only raw water pump for circulating raw water into the heat exchanger. Replace every other year or 50-60 hours. You'll hear a lot of buzz about the 3.7L's poor charging, cooling and engine water pump systems, but there are reasonable options for all. The engine is easy to work on, and treated right (like any engine) it will provide lots of good times. The engine is torque monster, mines a 1989, I've replaced the stator with the alternator conversion kit (watch out if you have power steering special mount necessary) and the points with electronic ignition ($90). Do these two things as soon as possible and you'll enjoy the season. Total time and cost to do the alternator and ignition - about 4 hours and $500.

Good luck.

Re: 1987 Merc 470 Summerizing

Thanks for the post. I ran the engine yesterday and got a good charge from the stator, so I'll wait to do the conversion until after the stator goes. I have a new impeller on order and will do everything in the stern drive when my gimbal bearing etc. arrive. 50-60 hours seems often since last year I put about 150 hours on my other boat, but I get your drift. I have read a lot about this engine already and am definitely going to keep a close eye on cooling! Regards. Nick
