1979 Mercrusier L6 165hp?

My engine on my new boat is overheating quick. When i have muffs on it no water gets up to the motor. I hooked a hose up directly to the engine and it ran fine at a low temp. I have no experience with mercrusier so i have no idea what is wrong. From reading around ive got the impression that there is a pump in the outdrive, if so how do i know if its bad and how do i get to it to replace it.

Re: Engine overheating

Welome to iboats :)
I would guess that your impeller is bad.....
I would recomend that you get Mercruiser service manual # 6....
Have a look at mercstuff.com....
If you have some tools & ability, it is not too hard....
There are some here that have mo better links so stick around....
If you use the rad 'Search' button at the top of this page you will find a wealth of information..... ;) .....JK

Re: Engine overheating

Is there a good site that shows how to replace it. Id like to get away without a manual. What should be the going rate to have a shop replace it?

In general if you are going to be doing some of your own work it is worth it to get the manuals.

What you pay for the manual is quickly saved by what you don't pay the mechanic, and by doing it right.
