Hi Guys,
The boat I purchased this winter has not run in a couple of years (1990 5.7L Mercruiser, Alpha One outdrive)and I have done an extensive search on this site for start up procdures. I have two questions.
1) How much Marvel oil should I send down each cylinder?
2) When I crank the pulley with a socket how much force would be required to turn the motor over by hand with out the plugs in it based on the fact it is not ceased up? I do not want to put to my preasure on it and break anything.

Thanks in advance for your reply's

With the plugs out, you should be able to turn it with a socket without much force at all. However, if it had water in it, and rusted up, I'd put a few squirts of Marvel in it every morning for a week, then try to work it free.

Thanks for the reply Bob, I wanted to make sure I was not forcing anything if there was a problem.

just make sure to turn the motor in the right direction....then if or when it is free turn motor over with starter (no spark plugs) for a minute to ensure that oil is throughout engine....good luck

Re: Start-Up

If I was starting an engine that set for 2 years, I would remove the distributor and use an oil priming tool with a drill to build up oil pressure for a while to get oil on the bearings before I ever thought about turning the engine over.

Re: Start-Up

Thanks again for all the input guys, although now you have opened a can a of worms for me.
1) As I look at the crank pulley do I turn it clockwise or counter clock wise?
2)If I use an oil priming tool do I still put Marvel oil in the cylinders?
3)The boat was winterised and the owner died before it was to back in the water. As part of the service he had done, the plugs, wires, distributor, and impellor where changed. Would I have to do this again?

Re: Start-Up

You do NOT turn the engine untill you use the oil priming tool, and putting the Marvel oil or any oil for that matter is only to give the cylinders a little lube when you turn the engine over.
After you prime the engine, put the distributor back in and have put oil in the cylinders, DO NOT put the plugs back in, rather you have the drive on or off means nothing here, then turn the engine over a few revolutions to spread the oil in the cylinders. Then put new plugs back in, hook up the muffs and start the engine. Reset the timing and you are good to start checking everything else on the power train from alternator belt to prop nut.
And you better have your Mercruiser (Not aftermarket) manuals handy.
