will not shift forward

i have a 74' mercruiser 140hp 3.0 ...... my problem is i fired up my boat for the first time with muffs on , and i can not shirt my control box ( shifter ) forward .... i can shift it in reverse and neutral fine , just cant shift forward it seems like somethings jamed ? any ideals shifter cable ? if so which 1 and how hard is it to replace? thanks for any help

It very well could be the cable. Was the drive removed and reinstalled between the time it worked and now when it doesn't work?

no the drive was not removed ... but the shifter was ( i put new carpet in over the winter )...

That could be the problem. If the cables are not allowed free movement up and down within about 2 or 3 feet from the control, that alone can prevent it from going into gear.
