Have a 1974 Mercruser I/O 140 4 cyl GM

Original carb and fuel pump

I am having a stalling problem that started will stalling at WOT. I would wait five min and it would start up and run fine for the reset of the day or do this a couple of more times.

At end of season would no longer start.

Finally have my manual and am going to start with a fuel pump volume test when I pull the boat out of storage.

Am thinking it may be the carb also.

Question, how likely is it that the original carb seals, float, etc... would last this long without this being all or part of the problem? problem?

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

thanks....

Are you sure it's not an ignition problem? Have you checked for spark? Is fuel squirting out of the accelerator pump jets when it died?

While your Fuel System may be in need of Maintenance,.....

I Agree it Sounds more like it's Loosing it's Fire,.....rather than it's Fuel........
Usually,...... Fuel related issues will cause Stumbling, etc., at High RPMs,....
Rather than a Flat Out Stall........

coil getting hot? That may not explain why you couldn't start at the end of the season

Because it's a 1974 and you say it's original carb and fuel pump, I would just spend the money and time and do everything, you're gonna fix the one problem now either ignition or fuel, and a week later the other is going to give you headaches. This is speaking from experience. Definitely rebuild the carb, tune up the ignition with new points-cap-rotor-plugs-wires.
Replace any fuel filters and check fuel lines for restrictions and check fuel tank vent before buying a fuel pump if problem persists. IF it's starving for fuel at rpm then that doesn't always mean fuel pump, check the free stuff (or less expensive stuff) before buying a pump.

It does stumble before going out, like it is starving for fuel. Thanks for the direction. I will take a look at all of those things when I get the boat back home from storage.

Would the recomendation be to rebuild the carb or buy a rebuilt instead.

Rebuild Kits are Cheaper than a Rebuilt Carb....

Installing a Rebuilt Carb is Quicker than Rebuilding Your's.......

I Guess it just depends on the path You wish to take.........

Hi,

I had THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM and I can tell you that these guys ARE on the right track. REBUILD or REPLACE your carb. More then likely, you have the same very hard to find problem I did -- quite simply, the float is STICKING OPEN and you are FLOODING the engine out. (Several embareassing tows because of this problem)

If you choose to rebuild the carb (its an easy one) you MUST make sure to SET THE FLOAT CORRECTLY!!!
There are TWO settings, NOT just one.
You will first set the level (how high the float can go before the incoming fuel is shut off)
And then you will set the FLOAT DROP (Extremally, Unbeliveably, Completly, and TOTTALLY IMPORTANT!!!!!!) Almost everybody forgets this one -- and its the cause of your current problem. Thats what the silly little tab on the back of the float is for (It hits the top of the carburetor and prevents the float from falling to far. Yours probably corroded off.
If the float can fall too far, IT WILL BIND, which means fuel just keeps coming in (thus why you run for a few minutes, THEN start to surge, THEN die). Also, thats why its at WOT -- at WOT, the fuel in the bowl drops significantly, and then comes back up. Letting it sit for a few hours gives the extra fuel time to evaporate.
When you put the new float in, AND AFTER SETTING THE FLOAT LEVEL, make sure it CAN drop far enough, though, or you will backfire and then die at high RPMS because you will be getting too little fuel. The actual spec is in the rebuild kit paperwork. (I used the sierra brand kit and it even had a little diagram to show you how to set the float).

Just to restate, THE FLOAT SETTINGS are the MOST IMPORTANT part of the rebuild (its a low force moving part -- remember, moving parts fail first -- especially low force ones)

Also, if your boat runs a little rough, think about a fuel / water seperator ($25 in sierra brand, comes with bracket and filter). Made a HUGE difference in mine, AND eliminated the white powery corrosion build up inside my carburetor.

hope this helps )

Thanks for all of the advice, since I now have a manual I also learned that there is a fuel filter in the carb too...didn't know that the one on the fuel pump wasn't the only one, duh.

Next thing is to get the boat home and start the work. will rebuild the carb and go from there.

Many thanks again!

Write down your carb numbers and manufacturer and call your local NAPA.
