Not sure how to ask this, so I will jump
right in :D

Boat info-

1990 rinker 186 captiva
4.3L V6
alpha 1 drive

Background info-

Bought this boat in 2000, used summers of 2000, 2001, and until July 2002.
Hit a stump in July 2002 and had lower unit rebuilt ($1800). Repair shop
informed me that the driveshaft bellow was leaking and the gimbal bearing and
u joints needed replaced. Decided to wait until spring 2003 to repair. Didn’t
winterize correctly and found cracked block in spring 2003. removed engine and
outdrive that spring and boat has been setting since.
(the drive has been stored upright in the garage. the engine dismantled and parts kept.)

The boat is good shape, while it has been stored outside ( I live in Ohio), it was always
covered and kept dry, there appears to be no rot in the interior and the transom looks to be solid.

The question-

With a remanf engine, new gimbal bearing and u joints plus all the misc stuff, I'm looking
at $2500.00 to put this boat back on the water.

I have the time and money, just wondering if this boat is worth the effort or should I junk it and spend 6000 - 8000 on another used boat?

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give as much info as possible.

All comments and feedback welcome.

Thanks,

Jerry

with a used boat you don't always know what your getting. At least with what you have, you know exactly what needs to be done. If you like what you have keep it especially if you can do the motor work yourself. A plus would be, again if your mechanically inclined, is you can go through the whole engine and have it be 100% when your done, know the thing inside out, and get at least a few years of reliable trouble-free service. You already have $1800 in the drive which hopefully means that's 100%.

Welcome to the forums here at iboats Jerry,.......

You might get some Salvage Return Money from parting out your boat,....
It's worth a fair chunk of change it Parts,..... It's worth Almost Nothing as a Non-Running Boat.......

At This Point,....... I see boating for $2500.00 Pretty Cheap,...... Compared to 5 Years or more paying for a New Boat.............

If, BIG if, the hull is sound $2500 (optimistic) to $ 3500 to insure a (mechanically) sound craft well into the foreseeable future is a bargain. On top of that you end up with a boat with a known history. That in it's self is a huge plus.

Thanks for the replies.

I have been lurking for awhile, checking things out. It looks like a great site with a lot of knowledgeable people.

As for the boat,

IMO, the boat is worth fixing, but I wanted to get some feedback from others just to make sure I wasn’t throwing my money away.

You guys will be seeing a lot more of me. I going to be asking questions every step of the way. :D

Jerry

Re: need advice on replacing engine

I had a similiar problem two years ago. I have twin 350 Cobras, a blown water impeller cause me to not get proper winterization into the block. I didnt find out until the next spring. I spent about 5 hours, replaced the block and it cost me about 2K altogether. Like everyone else said, if the hulls in good shape, you like the boat, it's well worth it. Plus you have confidence in the new engine. It will be just like having a new boat. Good Luck.

Where at in Ohio? I might know a guy interested in buying it as-is. But...

You'll spend a lot more than $2500 to get that boat going again. More like $3500. But the last time I checked, that's less than the $6000+ it would take to buy a newer boat that runs correctly with no work.

Jerry... check out Rapidomarine.com.
Reliable source for long or short blocks for your boat under $1500.

You could buy another boat only to find out later it needs a gimble bearing, bellows etc.

A side note for those of you on salt or brackish water, up here on fresh water mid size boats hold their value longer.
