Hi guys, Great place. Can any one help me or give me some suggestion to my situation.
Im new to boats, bought this 1988 Bayliner with OMC 5.7 V8 and ended up into desaster. I bought it in winter and was told that the boat was used lil for only two seasons. Then it kept sitting for years as the owner passed away. I bought the boat thinking that I would need some minor repair and service to get it into water. Now when I took it to marina to get it ready for summer. Turn out to be a desaster.
I was told that there is some sort of grinding noise coming from the engine. The guys at marina took the Stern off but that noise still came. The engire starts very easy but the noise is ugly. Guys at marina told me that they could not quite tell where the noise is comin from and suggested that the only way out is to put a new motor. Gave me a freakin estimate of $5500.
I decided not to go for it and took the boat to my car mechanic as he said that he would look at the motor. Now my car mechanic thinks that the motor is good its some other noise comin from behind the engine( may be fly wheel or something). Any idea to what I shall do in this situation. The mechanic says that he can fix the problem if he takes the motor out. Please advise.
Thanks

You need to find a new marina

To be honest if you cant DIY a LOT of this stuff your self its going to cost way to much money to fix :(

tommays

Forget the new engine. If the problem is the engine just get it rebuilt. Hopefully the block is good. If its not good, you still could get a rebuild cheaper than that. Hard to tell what the noise is. I guess the next thing to do would be to take off the intermediate housing and see if the noise goes away.

I agree with tommays. You really have to know how to do this stuff yourself or its going to costs big bucks. This is a great forum for help. I do most of my own work unless its really crazy (like rebulding a lower unit or something). But I could take it off myself and bring it in. That would save money. I have an older boat and sometimes wish I had a brand new one where I wouldn't have to worry about something breaking all the time.

Thanks.. Do you suggest to test for noise while the engine is still in the boat or I shall let my mechanic take the engine out and then test for the sound. Is it possible some rubbers have gone brittle that cause this noise? Any possibility of timing belt being bad? Appreciate your suggestions.

That's what I got out of it too. Could be a great many things causing this. First thing comes to mind is the engine was turned over without pre-priming of the oil pump. The good news is that 350's are a dime a dozen.

Re: HELP! Bayliner 1988 OMC 5.7L I/O engine V8

It was last used in 1995. Atleast thats what Im told when owner passed away. I had to put a new battery. All other system work normal. Checked pumps, lowered trim, started out well. Engine physically seem very very clean. I guess something might have gone bad by aging. Boat is physically in a very good shape overall. Mechanic is my frined and he offered me to work with him to troubleshoot the problem. Thats why Im seeking help from you guys. Thanks again.

Re: HELP! Bayliner 1988 OMC 5.7L I/O engine V8

I replaced my starboard '89 Cobra 5.7 two years ago. Luckily, my uncle owns a Railroad Construction company, so I have easy access to crans, lifts, heated shop with all the tools I need. I am no mechanic by any means, in fact, Im an IT guy. I pulled the engine, stripped the re-usable parts (like manifolds, carb, valve covers, alt, power steering pump, starter, etc...) swapped it for a new Marine block, put everything back together and dropped it back in my boat. It took me about 8 hours of my time (excluding the time it took the engine shop to get a good rebuilt block) and I was back in business, $1200 later. Not bad for a practically "new" engine. I would do it myself if I were you.. JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET A "MARINE" BLOCK AND PARTS. Some people use auto-blocks, but they dont have the proper stainless parts, and not designed to run at high-rpm's constantly like a marine engine.

David, Thanks for your post. I am a software Engg as well and do regular maintanence of my car myself. I would really like to go ahead taking this job myself but I dont have any access to any cranes or stuff. I might be able to get access to one at my frineds garage if I needed it. But atleast I need to establish if its the bad motor and I need to get it rebuilt. Did you start from a service manual or what?

I have no crane or cherry picker either. If it were me and I had to take an engine out, I would take it apart right there. Then again, you may not have enough room. I have plenty of room to work on the engine. Well, it's still tight, but compared to others, its nothing. I would remove the exhaust manifolds and risers and take them off the boat one by one, then the intake and then the heads followed by water pump and any other heavy parts. Take it out of the boat piece by piece down to the block. I'm not sure but two guys could probably lift a stripped down block with the crank and pistons in it.

Rox, what size boat do you have?

I forgot to mention getting the new engine back in. Unless you put it together yourself piece by piece.

The boat is 22'. Its not that tight around engine other than its deep down.
First I need to establish what needs to be done and is it really the engine that needs to come out and rebuilt.
I can remove the Sten myself put a water hose and try to start the engine myself. Please advise me whats the next step to take, to see if the noise goes away. At what level and how I can get an idea if its the engine that needs rebuilding. I can start taking the pieces off but when and how would I know that finally its the bad motor?

Re: HELP! Bayliner 1988 OMC 5.7L I/O engine V8

I had a similar boat to this one. It was a 1987 Bayliner 2150 with a 5.0L Cobra in very good condition. I sold it 4 years ago for $2500. Keep that in mind when you start thinking about putting a lot on money into it because you may not get it back.

Also, remember this has the OMC Cobra drive. Parts are not getting any easier to come by. That is a huge reason I sold my boat.

You might want to try this first, Pull the belts off the front and start it up.A friend of mine had a real bad grinding sound in his Blazer, turned out to be a bad water pump. Hope it's something easy like that. :D
Beef

What does this noise sound like? You mentioned "ugly" but not sure what that means. Is it a knocking noise? Is it a grinding noise?

Ive already took the belts off from front. Sound is still there, thats what makes me think its not water pump. Sound comes from back of the engine. Any guesses?
