I know for wasp you can use spray adhesive on them .. Their wings stick together and they hit the ground fast .. :joyous:
Pour some contact cement down the hole ..

Now that does sound interesting. I emptied the trap I set out and there had to be about a few hundred of them. But since there were a few flying around, I cleaned the trap and filled it again and set it out about a foot from the entrance. If they are still there tomorrow, I guess the need another drink.

Well, they've been getting into my house for the first time ever.... Looking for a place to hibernate. Found 3 different entrances, so far. I have a cedar house that may need to get redone next year. Boards are starting to warp. They've been up since '91. Smacked a bunch of those stingers on the windows. Frost, think frost.... I guess the local pest co. said they've seen more mice and wasps this year than ever before....

Musky - Please don't try any of the recommended solutions in this thread. :flame:

This has been a very entertaining read! Most of these ideas sound fun as hell! Here is how the pro's eliminate a ground nest...at late evening when the S.O.B.'s are all in the nest, prepare a 50/50% mix of dish soap and water, at least a couple gallons. Use the cheap soap, it doesn't matter. Throw a wet towel over the entrance to trap the Yellow jackets, careful there may be multiple locations. Carefully cut a small slit in the towel at the entrance, jam a funnel in it and start pouring the mixture into the nest until it is full. The soap suffocates the critters, and you're done. Stomp a golf ball into the hole(s) for good measure. I actually had an exterminator explain this process to me from a reputable company, used it and it worked like a charm.

I have done the mountain dew /dawn dish soap traps for years during the day, and Wasp and hornet spray at night to get the queen.

Wasp and hornet spray will melt certain plastics

Buddies dad did the gasoline thing once and thought he would light it. The ball of flame ignited the cedar tree near by and melted all the siding off the side of the house.

I did that as a kid on an anthill once but it didn't light so I walked away. Next mornjng I walk out and there's a crater.
I'm so glad the woods didn't go up!!!

I have been using household Ammonia for years; and it works every time. A gallon in a pump up sprayer; go out at dusk; spray. Go out the next morning; they are dead! That stuff works on just about any pest..

So many good ideas presented here. Seems YJs have effected lots of folks. I know they had gotten my attention a few times. That is why I hate them so bad. But with all the possible remedies thus far, the flame thrower has to be the best. I would go hunting for YJ nests if I had one of those.

If you really feel that way, you could go to harbor freight and get of one of their propane brush burners :) I'm alergic so that's a no go here, but I bet you could have a lot of fun. .. your wife might not be too impressed though.

I do like to get a can of WD40 and battle it out one on one. That can get exciting if you turn into popeye when you do get stung.

Speaking of popeye, I got hit by a honey bee last month that accidentally got under my safety glasses. It buzzed around a bit then decided to leave it's stinger behind. It sure hurt a lot on the temple but was OK for 24 hours. After that it began swelling until I only had a slit to look out. It took about 5 days to clear up.

Usually I don't get stung. I leave that for others. I tell people that I have an agreement with bees and hornets, I leave them alone and they leave me alone.

When young I'd sneak up on a large nest on a branch and squeeze the hole shut then shake it up good. That was fun until one returned from outside and wanted back in. Then I'd run off quickly for a hundred feet and stand watching the commotion.

I'd also tie a 3' string around a wasp's middle and lead it around.

What kids will do for fun.

Well happy, or sad, depending on how you look at it, I can't find even one YJ flying around now. I checked the special drink area I provided for them, and even the YJ trap I set back out, and not a one is flying anywhere or in the trap either. So I guess I won this ROUND. I am certain there will be another.

Musky, you are going on vacation, so close the house up tight, break the gas line in the house so the gas builds up, killing all the critters. And to make sure you got it, set an igniter on a timer to go of after the gas concentration would be high enough to kill off everything... just as a precaution, mind you ... you don't want any fumes lingering when you get back to what used to be your home ...
