Re: CRANE HI-6 M QUESTION

its not gonna give you any more voltage really. the spark system only uses as much energy as it takes to jump the plug gap throgh the resisted wires. BUT it will give you a multiple spark which is good. make sure that it is set on 8cylinder though. i dont know if the h6m is good for 8ers, should be.

NO don't use it !!!!!!!

Sell it on Ebay or something. Don't go futzing with that engine unless you understand what is going on.

Re: CRANE HI-6 M QUESTION

Don S, the problem with this engine is that the engine burns rich, and blackens up the transom slightly. I know for a fact that Mercruiser did and do program the ECU's so the engines burn a little rich.
This engine has 6 hours on it. And starts in one try at any given time. Would it not clear up the richness and reduce or eliminate the black on the transom ?? I'm going to sell this engine at the end of the season and put in a zz572, maybe I'll use it on that engine to.

It will not clear up the richness, but it MAY give you a little less sooting. I would first make sure that there was not another problem causing the rich condition.

The Crane HI-6M is one of the best CDI systems out there, but if you install it make sure that you understand how to bypass it and reconnect the original ignition system "on the fly" should you want/need to.

Dave

Re: CRANE HI-6 M QUESTION

Well, you were warned........

IMO, I just don’t understand why you (anybody) would think that a state of the art ignition system designed and installed by one of the worlds biggest automotive manufactures (GM) and than modified for marine use by the worlds leading marine engine company (Mercruiser) will benefit by adapting an after market system. I have no issue with the Crane and I agree it’s possibly the best of its type on the market but it’s designed to work with serious modifications such as supercharging, in that application its adjustability will work well as the effects of serious modifications are outside the normal scope and range of the factory system. It may also work well when fitted to an older less hi-tech ignition but it will not fix your rich condition, it may cover it up if it works at all!! But it’s just not the way to fix it. You have a problem and nobody will deny that but to attempt a backyard fix by fitting an aftermarket piggyback ignition to that engine is a recipe for disaster. My trade master always told me that the worst two things the average boater can possess are a curious mind and a bit of mechanical knowledge. You seem to have the money, so get that thing checked out by a pro, the best advise you have received is from Don, ignore it at your peril! Good luck, me thinks your gunna need it.

I understand that you can have the ECM re-programed to fix the sooting problem.
