which hingepins are ya dealing with? the later style that use the 12pt tool? if so try a 13mm and heat. you can also use a dremel to make it 14mm and use heat, heavy on the heat :) :)
if its slips with that big allen odds are you will snap off an easy out.
either snap it off or expand the threads into the bell housing thus permanantly locking it.
I have had my welder buddy weld in an allen wrench on rare occasions when I get them when all else has failed.

aint saltwater and no maint great:)
most non maint junkers I respectfully decline to work on anymore.
by the time I see them it costs to much. I bill by the hour.
if I aint working on this piece of junk I would have been working on that one.
I also chage 125 per broken stud if I have to helicoil it, otherwise its still 75 per hour and a 15 dollar oxy/acetelyne fee.
I got paid for running a boat 23 miles each way today to get it to the shop, guy wants it for the weekend and it had to go in. he lives out of town so I drove to his house, loaded my tools onto his boat, ran the boat to wanchese did my thing and ran it back.
2 hours of pay for riding a boat and the gas was free.
man what a job.

The only other Trick I can think of for doing this kind of job On-Site,....
Is to drill a small hole Clean Thru the pin,....
It helps Relieve it,+ allows application of Heat to the Inner parts of the Pin.........

never thought of that Bondo, will give it a try..this just started out as a re-boot job cause the housing was getting water in it someplace.calls me after the shift cable is frozen solid from sitting all winter.last call was to replace the starter because it went underwater and burned the cables off the starter. Will give an update soon.

Well, finally got that hinge pin out, had a welder MIG the pin up solid and add a large nut migged on top. corrosion was so bad that some of the threads came out too. if i cant get it cleaned up its off the the welder to fill and retap the holes.
Thanks for the suggestions.

As much as we try and try to get the owners to do just the basic maint. items. a little grease goes a long way in reducing the hours required to do even the simple things.ever drill out a pivot pin frozen in the drive from lack of grease after the owner mashed it with a hammer trying to get it out. or a part = $.50
labor = $600.00
repairable prop destroyed from no grease on the shaft, had to be cut off.but i guess this is how we do make a few bucks.Read the manual, Do the basics and you will find your repair costs DO GO DOWN when you need to bring it in for service.

You guys that do this Professionally,...........

WHERE, Do you Draw the Line,+ Tell them they need New Transom Assemblies,.... Or Outdrives,... Or Engines,.???....

If all the equipment was Greased,... Every Day,....Most of My Job,..... Just Wouldn't Exist......
If it was Greased Weekly,........ Life would be Much More Tolerable......

Today I pulled onto a jobsite,+ could Hear the pins on a frt.end loader Groaning........
I'd liked to have drug the Operator's butt out the the tractor,+ Beat him,......
Instead,..... I shut him Down,+ Handed him a Grease Gun.............

Believe Me,........... I'm Doin' All I Can to Spread the Grease............................................... :D

after 30+ years of working on this saltwater junk I can tell by looking at the rig if its viable to repair.
usually if it has not been off/apart in the last 4 years there is a good chance it wont come apart.
marine equipment is unique in the fact it has to work at full load constantly in the worst possible environment.

If its a Pin, then its in a hole, Correct? and if you heat the pin wouldn't it expand tighter in the hole?

Heat kills Loctite....
Expansion & contraction often frees rusted or oxidized parts ;) .....JK

The owner is going to keep this $360.00 pin as a memento and reminder to start using something called GREASE

With a Hole thru the offending part,......
And a Fine Neutral Flame on a Small Blue Tip Wrench,.............
The Offending piece is Heated,..... Hot,...... Very Hot,........
And,.....
Quenched...........

That Shrinks it...........

Another way to the Same Place is to use a Stick Welder,........You can use the Welding Rod as a Handle to get the broken bolt out.......
I posted a small post about doing That on a 3.0l Broken Starter Bolt.......
