Chevy 250 L6

Im having trouble with starter on chevy inline 6 .I have narrowed it down to I belive I install the flywheel backwards <br />I took an old starter and took it apart cut shaft off at windings so i could install starter and see what is going on <br /><br />After doing that im even more sure i put flywheel on backwards ..I have installed many flywheels on cars .I looked at it and tried to intstall with what would be the holes to attatch clutch to it if it were in a car but didnt seem to fit so i turned it aroun so flat machined side was facing forward toward the motor seemed to fit alot better<br /><br />I'm at my wits end and about to pull the motor <br />Any advice would be met with a million thanks and even if you have no idea Thank you for taking the time to read

tipical mistake for a chevy, ive done it myself.<br />seemed like the starter gear just did not get deep<br />enough into the flywheel for a good mesh.<br />try to measure how far the starter gear kicks out in refreance to where the flywheel is, the starter will need to be shimed or yes the flywheel is backa**wards. your not alone on that one my freind.

Thanks Michael I forgot to mention before i cut up an old starter to get a look at what was happening I started with no shim and then added them until it was obviously a bigger problem<br />I really thought the flywheel wouldnt go on the other direction as far as clearance to back of block ...that thought is the only thing keeping me from pulling motor out <br />I wasnt very clear about the holes in flywheel for mounting clutch i meant on a car those holes are on the side that face the transmision , that is how i tried to install it and it seemed wrong .It is now intstalled with those holes facing the engine ,Making the teeth on flywheel further away from starter gear<br /><br />Could there a possibly be a spacer that would allow me to flip the flywheel over? boat came to me with motor in peices

flat machined side was facing forward toward the motor seemed to fit alot better

It sure was! Pulled it flipped it over and ir works fine. Sure glad my cherry picker fit on deck <br />Thanks a million Mike and Bondo now i can get out fishin the kings are thick and the weathers fine
