This system replaces the choke and according to MC ads gives MPI style starting. My experience says they've created a more expensive carb.I don't really have starting problems but it's no different than any other I/O or OB I've owned. We're talking about cold starts, no problem after warmup. You still have to pump and prime.I have 27hr on this '05 4.3 and it has been this way from day one.I would like to hear the experiences of others who have TKS.

I've always owned an outboard, now I have an '06 4.3 with TKS and 11 hours on it. No problems. Kinda reminds me of how my first car used to start, a '77 AMC Gremlin.

Re: Turn key start (TKS) carb

Hi Sumcat and the group, I might be wrong about this but I think the TKS uses a IAC (Idle Air Control)and a module to start the engine without moving the throttle. The only short coming I noticed was there was no fuel pump relay or circuit to run the fuel pump for a few seconds at key up like a MPI does.

Don't know how well they work but it seemed like an interesting idea.

Take care, Dale

TKS has it's own jet and mixes fuel and air in a chamber which exits below the throttle plate and is drawn in by engine vacuum. Your first try is in neutral with the throttle plate closed. If that doesn't work then you resort to the old pump and prime routine.Mine has only started once in neutral and died after a few seconds.Maybe I expect too much. Thats why I'm looking for others experience.

Re: Turn key start (TKS) carb

I have a 2005 Mercruiser 5.0L with the caburated TKS. So far, with 5 hours on it (bought in leftover in March of this year), I am unimpressed with its (cold starting) performance. I still have to pump the throttle 2-3 times, and then play with it until it starts. Someone suggested that maybe it's not working correctly, and I will have the dealer look at it at my 20 hour servicing.

Re: Turn key start (TKS) carb

Thanks for the feedback Bob. At 27hr I haven't had my 20hr service yet. Sounds like a good issue to raise.

Re: Turn key start (TKS) carb

if you mean neutral/no throttle thats exactly how its meant to be started. if it isnt starting like this there could be another issue. i have heard of a workaround that didnt meet epa standards.
basically its an electro/thermal valve that slowly closes as it warms, it requires zero throttle to operate correctly. it may stall once or twice right after startup even when adjusted correctly.
