We have a 2005 Maxum 1800MX with Mercruiser 3.0L. It has been running great since day one. We went out today tubed for about two hours all was well. We were going to another spot @ about 35mph the boat shuttered then died. We have no guages, no alarms, no noise what so ever. The battery was dead when we got back home, however with the charger on start we still get nothing. I checked all the fuses I could find and they are fine. I don't know where to look next. It is still under warranty, however the closest Maxum dealer is 250 miles away.

try another battery. could be it just died. i would check the fuel filter as well, could be it blocked or filled with water.
should be a breaker mounted topside on that engine, a red button. press it and try again.
check both the ground and positive cables are tight/clean connections at the battery and engine.

Re: Stalled while cruising along.

You don't need a Maxim dealer, you need a Mercruiser dealer, any Mercruise dealer near you can do warranty issues with the engine and drive.

You might also check your lanyard switch (kill switch, deadman switch, what ever you call it.)

Tried the engine reset button nothing. There was a noise we never heard before when we first started. It was a whistle noise. We had just toppped off the oil and power steering fluid. (Not in the same place) I still have no guages and nothing when charger is hooked up. If the engine locked up would we at leste get guages?

Re: Stalled while cruising along.

You could have any number of things wrong, from a defective circuit breaker on the engine, a bad main harness connection, bad battery switch, etc. What you need to do is get a test meter and start from the battery and find out where you loose power or ground. A bad ground will kill your power as quickly as a bad positive cable.

mechanical and electrical problemns are usually separate. if for some reason you had an over heat you may have fried the harness that runs along the manifold. this may or may not prevent power going forward. look closely at the entire engine harness, pull it up and inspect it carefully along its entire length. its easy to miss a melted harness if its still stuck to the engine.
try jumping the terminals at the back of the main breaker, if you get sparks you may have a short.

be sure to try another battery, they have 6 cells 2volts each, 1 cell can break and you will have a incomplet circuit.

Re: Stalled while cruising along.

We have a diagnosis. The main circuit breaker is shorted. Any clues on what may have caused this? Did we do something we were not aware of. I don't think any water has ever been on the top of the motor and it is garage kept when not in use. The Tech is having trouble finding the part, is this an almost never happens kind of thing?

It happens, but I have never seen it happen on something so new......

They go bad occasionally, for no particular reason. Even right out of the box brand new.
Don't see why your mechanic is having such a hard time finding one. It's the same 50A breaker Mercruiser has been using for years.
Part number is 88-806950

Re: Stalled while cruising along.

I just got the phone with the Tech. Thanks for the part number. He is hoping to have us ready to go tomorrow. He said he charged the battery and it showing 12amps but he has not checked the Alternator. He suggested I take it to the auto parts store and have it checked but can they do that with it installed? Should I have a warm fuzzy to tow it 450 miles for the long holiday? We traded the last boat because we didn't trust it, I just hope this one is not the same way.
I want to thank everyone for all the help!

He is not a "Tech"....he is an Idiot.
Get your boat away from that moron and take it to a real marine mechanic.

Re: Stalled while cruising along.

I agree with bomar76, if that is what your "Tech" said, then he doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. Plus, he couldn't find a standard part circuit breaker till you gave him the number???? What kind of a tech is he, automotive??? EDIT: No, that wouldn't be it, even an automotive tech wouldn't say that say things like that.

Re: Stalled while cruising along.

Picked her up about an hour ago. Took her out and running like a charm. I found out when I picked her up I had been talking to the guy who brings the boats around and hooks them up for you. They only had to go across town for the parts:( I only hope we stay fixed. I replaced the battery just to be sure.
Thanks to all for you help.

We just got back and everthing was fine except I think we got some bad gas. Idle seems a little off after the second fill up. When the idle seems off we get this singing noise (Sounds like fuel pump noise in a car) It has done this since we got it. If we add fuel additive it seems to go away.
