I have just purchased a boat with a Alpha 1 lower drive unit that has a crack in the lower unit and makes a heck of a racket when I spin the prop by hand clockwise or counter while in gear.

How do I ascertain if it is the just the lower drive I need to replace and not the upper? What stops water from getting into the upper drive when a lower unit cracks and gets water? Thanks in advance for any assistance

If the lower unit is cracked, then it should not be in the water at all because the drive oil wouldn't be present.

Does it appear to be strike damage to the lower unit, or more of a split due to water inside that froze?

The Odds Are,...... You need a Complete Outdrive,...... Upper,+ Lower........

They Share a Common Oil Cavity,....

You're probably looking at $1500. to $3500.+....... Rebuild or New..........

The Big Question is,........ Are You turning your Own wrenches,...... Or Hiring All the Labor out,..???....

Btw,........ Welcome to the forums here at iboats.........

if its in gear you will have a "ratcheting sound"
in fwd it will lock counterclockwise and ratchet clockwise, just the opposite for rev.

Thanks guys!!

The damage is a small freez split with no other areas that resemble strike damage. Plenty of regular non milkey oil came out of the split when I lowered the drive completely so I am hoping that it is a freeze damage from the winter. I am going to pull it and inspect it.

Can anyone give me any gotchas on pulling the lower drive it looks like two nuts on the left and right, one closest to transome and one furthest from transome. This one looks like it needs a real skinny socket to get the bolt?

Makes a rachet noise clockwise in gear going to go test if it locks up on counter

thanks again for all your time

best way is to have the manual. dropping one is easy, installing it properly is another thing.everything MUST be lined up correctly or you can damage the unit.
