throttle control problem?

i posted this question on another part of the forum and thought someone here might be able to answer it as it pertains to Bayliner.<br /><br />This is a single lever control with only one button underneath the handle that is the neutral safety switch, preventing you from accidently engaging the throttle. Depressing the button shifts the engine into gear. There appears to be no other button or manner of disengaging the prop in order to give it more gas like when you are warming up the engine. Not sure about the model, seems to be original equipment on this old boat! Any suggestions of what to do short of replacing it with a more modern throttle control?

Joe, sometimes they had a button where the lever pivots that you could push in while pushing shift control forward. I have seen some that the whole lever will pull out toward you to activate warm up mode. Hard to say which if any you have.

The only button on it is the neutral safety and depressing it allows the shifter to shift it into gear. the handle does not pull up as some do allowing the throttle. someone suggested that the lever might move toward the middle of the boat allowing throttle only. Is that what you mean by pivoting? I haven't tried that yet.

Yes Joe, toward the center of the boat. Sometimes they work that way just for warm up.

I'll try that and let you know. Won't be for a couple of weeks though as I am recuperating from surgery, had 5 bypasses, quite a shock since my cardiologist just thought it was going to be a simple stent. for now I am land locked!

Here is the result of further investigating this control unit. It does pivot towards the center of the boat and can be moved forward. But in that position the ignition won't start. Ignition is only capable in the Neutral position of the control so still cannot get a throttle only conditon. I found a owners manual recently from Bayliner for this 1950 capri bowwrider cx. It indicates using the method described above leaving it in 1/4 throttle position to engage the key to start position but this does not work on mine. <br /><br />any ideas of what to troubleshoot?

Hey Joe, don't know if you are doing it this way, but maybe do not pull up on the little button underneath to change it's gears. Just leave it alone and see if it won't move.

tried that too still cannot start it, will only start in Neutral. funny that the manual instructions don't work? only other thing I can think of is there is something not quite adjusted right where the throttle/gear cable connects at the outdrive. there is a caution in the repair manual about not adjusting that linkage too far one way or the other or else you might lose your Neutral. maybe that has something to do with my problem?

It is an I/O engine.<br /><br />This is turning into a real puzzle.<br /><br />Any other 1985 era Capri Bowrider owners out there with a similar Bayliner standard control?

Joe, are you saying that when throttle lever is pulled out to give engine some more gas while in neutral, it wont crank?? If so, I would be inclined to suggest that you neutral safety switch is bad or out of adjustment.

i would lean on the switch as well. i know mine wont start unless the captain safty wrist strap plug is attached. it will fire up but die right away if its not plugged in on my bayliner. but the cables might be sticking as well does the prop spin in its suppposedly neutral? make sure that its not goin into gear?

Scott- correct pulling out the throttle lever to give it gas won't let it crank. how can I test the neutral safety switch or how do you adjust it? In this throttle lever pulling it out means to pivot it towards the center of the boat while pushing it forward to give it more gas.<br /><br />Joe

i would get a manual and see how "things" work....almost a definite problem with throttle lever/nuetral safety switch. Maybe something is worn out, broke, or out of alignment. No matter what, your probably going to need to take throttle lever apart to inspect.
