OMC STARTER WONT TURN FLY WHEEL

HELLO ALL <br />I HAVE 87 BAYLINER WITH A 4 CYLENDER I/O<br />I REMOVED THE STARTER AND HAD IT RE BUILT DUE TO IT JUST HITTING THE FLY WHEEL AND MAKING THAT SCRAPPING (NOT ALL THE TIME) SOUND WHEN I RE INSTALLED IT IT STILL MAKES THAT SCTAPING SOUND (ALL THE TIME).THERE WERE NO SHIMS THERE WHEN I REMOVED IT. DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY IDEAS I AM LOST THE MOTOR IS NOT SEEZED <br />THANK YOU <br />

Would that be a Cobra 2.3 or a Mercrusier 140? Little more info please...<br /><br />In either case hows the teeth look on the flywheel?

ring gear may have cracked loose and slipped too far back

SHOULD THERE BE SHIMS ON THE STARTER?<br />WHO MAKES THE MOTOR IF IT NEED TO BE REPLACES ?<br />CAN YOU DO IT WITH A CAR ENGINE?

did that starter start the motor this year or just last year.

LOOSE THE CAP-LOCK,...........<br /><br />The Teeth of the Starter might be Fine,.... How about the Flywheel......??<br /><br />Did the RebuildShop install a New Bendix,.??<br />

I dont know if the bendex was changed <br />sorry for the cap locks the teeth on the starter and fly wheel look ok ?

Lets see:motor was running at some point, starter was making a grinding noise,rebuilt starter , still makes noise. =loose/broken ring gear, ring gear too deep.<br />measure from ring gear to block mounting bolts,, compare with bendix extended to starter bolts.

normally: establish the rotation of the starter,disassenble, bead blast housings,clean and true armature, replace brushes,replace bendix,lube, assemble, bench test.<br />only other time youll get that noise is if the bendix drive is bad and wont lock up internally, most have 4-8 ball bearings that jam in the housing to lock it up for starting and allow fow over-run when the motor starts.
