changed the starter, started her up and no compression in 2 cylinders.
They said they pulled the valve cover and one of the valve springs was broken.
They said that they are going to change that and see if it fixes it.
Question is, if only one valve spring is broken then why is there no compression in 2 cylinders. My guess is my pistons are toast. They already started the valve spring change and said if that does not work then they have to pull the head to see. Should I waste time on labor removing the head if the valve spring does not work because I will most likely have to get a new motor or a rebuild. If i rebuild i will most likely be taking the motor to another shop.
What do you think
454 mercruiser magnum in a 1989 baja sport

Can't see how a broken spring alone would drop 2 cyl. I think you would be money ahead to just pull the head and inspect. There is more here than just a broken valve spring.

Why didn't you go to the other shop first ?

I'd pull the head and diagnose fully.A rebuilt motor is a tad bit pricier than a spring replacement and a valve job.

DHP
