Which engine will pull my boat and trailer?

I have a older 1975 Classic cuddy cabin boat and trailer. Boat weight 3,700 pounds, and not sure what the trailer weighs, a guess is 1200-1500 pounds. Never really pulled it, just once with my dump truck. But I was looking to get a new truck and not sure which size engine. I am looking at Ford Expedition's. They come with 4.6 liter and 5.4. Will the 4.6 be O.K. Will the 5.4 be O.K. or should I look bigger. Thanks, Seibel

What is the expedition rated to tow? 5000+ is alot to tow...I would go with the 5.4 if you can afford it.

I have an older (1978) tandem trailer made of galv. steel for boats 18 -21 feet & it only weighs 650 lbs by itself>>>I think you may be over estimating the weight of your trailer >>>not that that is a bad thing.<br />You need to know what the truck is rated to tow & then figure if you are in or will tow in a hilly area or flat.<br /> Even if your towing 4700Lbs>>>I think you would need a bigger V8 & stronger drive train.>>maybe the Explorer is more called for here.<br />Good luck

You'll be happier with the 5.4 Seibel. Especially if you have many hills. They are both jewels of a motor but the 4.6 is just about good enough to pull the vehicle around without straining.

Yes, get the 5.4, the resale value will be better when you get ready to trade and I would guess the Fuel mileage will be close to the same.

I pull my Splendor Cat around with our Expedition and it has the 4.6 Our boat weighs 4200 lbs. without the trailer and fully loaded with fuel and water. I cant get any kind of mileage pulling it but it handles it just fine.

Fully loaded your are going to be hauling 5000#. I have one and believe the Expedition is a great tow vehicle. I'm sure the 4.6 would do the job, but I would suggest the 5.4l and transmission cooler. (tow Package) Some of the Expeditions come with a load leveling suspension too. I wish I had that on the days I'm really loaded down with people and gear.<br /><br />Kevin

Get the 5.4. The resale will be much greater, fuel economy close to the same.<br /><br />There is no manual trans. available with either.

I pull my boat, utility, and two horse trailer with my little Dodge V-6 magnum and have no need for more power or suspention, but then that's just a Dodge. :D

Get the 5.4. The 4.6 is fine, but I wish I had more oomph when pulling in the heat with the AC on.<br /><br />Getting the higher ratio gears will also help.

Re: Which engine will pull my boat and trailer?

Everyone has hit the nail n the head. I tow about 4000-4200lbs with my F-150 supercab with 4.6/auto/3.55ls gears. I usually have a couple people in the truck and a few things in the bed. The 4.6 gets the job done hands down no questions asked, but at interstate speeds, it could use a bit more umph. For the weight you will have, I would look for a 5.4 with 3.73ls gears. Can't complain aout my 4.6. I get 18-20mpg with a heavy foot and still get 12-14 towing. Both the 4.5 and the 5.4 like to wind quickly, so the lower gears may not hurt the mileage too much.

Expedition with the bigger engine. Even if you don't absolutely need the extra cubes, there will be time you wish you had them. Expedition is a fine tow vehicle.

I tow 4500lbs with a 03 E-250 van. 4.6, 4sp auto, 4.10 rear gear. Good gas mileage, no problems.

JasonB said it all...I have the 4.6L in an F150 SuperCrew, am very satisfied, and usually tow 5000 lbs. The 3.73 gears (if that's what the 5.4 comes with) will further reduce fuel economy. If I did it again, I'd opt for the 4.6 for good over-all performance and reasonable fuel economy since I tow or carry heavy loads less than 5% of total miles driven.

Your transmition is what you should be looking at. Any v8 should pull it with no problem. If you a choice between spending the extra on a larger v8 or the towing package, and you plan on trailering alot I'd pick the trailer package. Sounds like a sweet truck!!!<br /><br /> Jim

Re: Which engine will pull my boat and trailer?

BTW: one thing to consider if you are looking at used vehicles. In the F-150's (and likely the expy's), the 4.6 and 5.4 come with different trannys and rears. The 4.6 comes with the 4R70W tranny (also used with the V6) and an 8.8 rear end. The 5.4 comes with the slightly beefier 4R100 (or something like that) and a 9.? rear. The axle ranges for the 4.6 and 5.4 as I observed were: 4.6- 3.31, 3.55(most common), 3.73 (4wd and rare in 2wd), and I think they could be ordered with 4.10. The 5.4's I saw had 3.08(horrible for towing large loads), 3:55(saw a few), 3.73, and the rare 4.10. <br /><br />If you check the door tag, you can find out the ratio code. I can't remember the off the top of my head (a quick search of f150online.com would get them quickly). I do know that if the code ends in H, the rear is limited slip. If you don't need 4wd, I would get LS for towing a boat. I have never spun a tire dragging my larger boat up ramps.<br /><br />This info is what I remember from mty F-150 research 2 years ago. May be slightly different for Expys though.<br /><br />Gust to give an example of the MPG numbers, my 4.6 w/3.55 gears gets 18-20mpg on average. My father-in-law has trhe same truck with the 5.4 and 3.08 gears and gets about 1mpg better than I do. My tow rating is about 6800lbs. His is 3000. Big difference. Be careful of the axle ratios.<br /><br />Be sure you get one with the factory towing package which in my '99 included a tranny cooler, larger alternator-I think, and a good frame hitch. A power steering coler was standard I think.<br /><br />The 4.6 and 5.4 are both workhorses, esp. the newer ones. Mine is a '99 rated at 220hp. The 4.6 now has improvedheads and is rated at 231. The 5.4, depending on year, is between 260 and 300. You won't be dissappointed with either. Mine already has 65k trouble free miles.

Hey, Thanks all, have been away a couple of days. With gas prices these days like to get the smaller one, but fishing comes first. Seibel
