Old "mixed" outboard fuel

I have a 1971 16' Avenger ski boat that used to have a 1971 Johnson 125hp outboard strapped to it. Last year, I towed a guy who was "dead in the water" and ended up losing a cylinder. Nevertheless, I bought a 1978 115hp Evinrude outboard that I now use for my boat. I need to know whether 2-cycle "mixed" fuel is usable after sitting for over 1.5 years. I don't think I'm going to use it regardless, so any suggestions on what type of disposal container to put 12 gallons of gas into? I need to take it to the dump, but don't know what to put it in.

Avenger as Gasoline is a hazardous material you can not "take it to the dump".

As you sig does not indicate where you live, Try the Following:

1. Here in Jersey the Counties have hazardous waste clean-up days which are free for residents where they can dispose of paint, gas, oil, etc...

2. See if an auto shop will take it off your hands and send it with their drain oil and other hazardous materials.

3. Finally if they fail find a drain oil recycle they can probably help.

If you want to get rid of it burn it a gallon at a time mixed with a tank of new gas...it won't hurt anything.

I think I would put it into mY truck or car like OZ said. With the price of fuel, I dont think I would dispose of it. Your car or truck will never even know its there, even at 2-3 gallons per tank.

ZMOZ and I are pretty cheap, but I think he has me beat sometimes. Or should I say "frugal"?

i wouldn't use it for nuthin, ok. todays gas sucks to say the very least. so pour it out, burn it, or do anything with it before burning it in ur engine, ok. later man.

Thanks for all the advise...

jg... When I said I'd take it to the dump, I meant on the days that they allow household hazardous waste - I just didn't know what container to take it there in.

LubeDude... can you put "mixed" gas into another vehicle like a car?...even if it's diluted down?

Paul... I'm kinda thinkin on the same lines as you. That's why I'd like to get rid of it preferrably, rather than use it in my "older" outboard.

Yes. Put into a full tank of gas the oil ratio will be somewhere around 1200:1. Most old cars burn more oil than that. You can burn it just fine in your outboard though, that little bit of gas will do absolutely nothing. PAULBWHITE is overly scared. There is nothing to be worried about. You most likely would have no problem burning it straight. Mix it 10:1 with new gas and you will have no problems in any engine. Gas is too damn expensive to just throw it away.

You should follow the recommedations of the engine manufacturer which would tell you that gasoline stored for winter should be treated with a gas stabilizer. If it wasn't treated then you have the right idea by disposing of it properly. Following the manufacturers recommendations is always the wisest choice. $25 isn't worth the risk when you consider the cost of outboard parts and labor.

Most oil mixxes have a fuel stablizer built into them so it is most likely still good as boat fuel.

Why anyone would chance problems with their car (with all it's sensors/computers) or outboard is beyond me? Guys were talking 12 gal of fuel!! Run it through a lawnmower or something but not your car or outboard.

 There's nothing to "chance" here. Year and a half old gas isn't bad anyway, I wouldn't hesitate to run it straight. Even if it was completely bad, 1 gallon of it mixed with a tank of good gas WILL NOT DO ANYTHING! NOT A CHANCE IN HELL!! Who needs 12 gallons of gas in their lawnmower? Around here 12 gallons of gas is almost $30. I don't know about you, but I certainly wouldn't throw $30 in the garbage. But I guess you're rich, so go ahead, throw it away.

I ran 2 year old gas in my 93 Ford Ranger from my boat when I bought it and it didnt even flinch. Four cycles are not as finicky as 2 cycles when it comes to fuel. Oz is right, We may be cheap, but we aint stupid. You would have no problem in an outoard either running just a gallon through it per tank.

My old Jeep sat for 3 years with half a tank of gas. Started up and ran just fine on it - not only that but passed an emissions test!

[edit] Just a note to those new to the forum, just because advice is posted here doesn't mean you should follow all of it. Use your common sense and your owners manual to decide which recommendations to follow. ;)

Re: Old "mixed" outboard fuel

With the price of gas today and my limited income (455 mo), I have filled up both the car and boat (Mixed (Incase I had the opertunity to run it)) and at the end of the month, I start taking it out and running it in the car. Did that with 1.5 year old gas 2 months ago. Car is a 93 Mustang V-8 and it didn't care one bit, even when mixed 50:1.

http://www.myfishingpictures.com/showphoto.php?photo=13003&sort=7&thecat=500&password=

Craig

Hey LubeDude, Aren't you the one with the thread that's been going for three weeks trying to figure out why your motor won't stop 'coughing and sneezing' at idle even though you've rebuilt/replaced the entire fuel system? Bad gas will cause those exact symptoms. If it's got old fuel in it I would try dumping it and filling up with some new fuel. ;)

Re: Old "mixed" outboard fuel

Come on Quamtumleap, Do you really think I would have old fuel in my boat if I didnt want it in there. Knowone is telling anyone that it is the best practice, only that it can be done without problems. I did say that 2 cycles are more prone to bad gas problems, and I still say that if you put in a gallon of old gas with a full tank of good, you will have absolutly no problems. Providing there isnt a bunch of contaminants in it or water, you do have to us your head. If I had a bunch of old gas that I didnt know how old it was and it smelled like Cat Pi*s, I think you know what I would do with it. Where did you say you lived? :D :D

No not really, Im only kidding!!
