wait a minute.. ive heard that barnacles on the boat can pretty much render it useless.. so you should get that stuff cleaned off.. and make sure you get some good bottom paint..

Originally posted by jaybirdhi:
if the prop was spun would the rpm's not jump like car with a bad cluch. the rpms are being held down which makes me believe there is no slipping.

i jumped in the water yesterday and the whole bottom is covered with barnicles. i mean not one square inch of flat bottom with out barnacles all over it. i still cant believe that would slow the boat down that much but what do i know.

my rpm gauge works now and no i dont get over 5000 rpms in nuetral.should i?? also when im crusing along(at 10mph) i hear a knocking very lightly. its not in the motor so im assuming its either in the drive or on the bottom of the boat. sound familiar???
- yes the rpms would jump. And not all props have a hub which can break free and slip just so you know. Are you sure yours has a hub? Most hubs these days I see are plastic, and designed to just break on a prop strike in which case you won't spin the prop at all.

- i told you so. you have to clean the barnacles off!!!!! what you may try to save you the time and money off hauling and blocking the boat, is beaching the boat at high tide, with the outdrive all the way up of course. I've done this a few times with my 24' formula. Scrape all the barnacles off the bottom with a putty knife. Use some common sense when doing this, like having less than a 1/4 tank gas so when the boat is laying way over on the v of the hull you don't have gas running out the tank vent. And some blocking to prevent the boat from rolling completely over is a good idea, especially if it's a really deep v-hull not to mention you'll be under it. But realize that if you don't bottom paint it the barnacles will grow right back so if you want to keep the boat in the water you're gonna have to bottom paint it which means hauling the boat anyway! but for a weekend you can get away with cleaning the bottom like this and will solve your problem of not being able to get on plane. just be ready for the funny looks people will give you when the boat's beached.

- revving the motor to 5000 rpm in neutral and then reporting a knocking sound makes me want to just post a  but I'll be nice and say that it's not good to be doing that. up to 3000 rpm ok, maybe up to 4k, but over that serves no useful purpose and is just wear and tear on moving parts. most motors are only good to 4800 rpm, redlines typically being at 5000-5200 rpm. I know you said your motor was built, so maybe it has a higher redline than normal but still....
hey, if this is how you treat your boat tell us about your previous 4 boats :p :D

Re: boat will not plane out!!!

hmmm. scrape her down boy, and "PAINT" it. ive done the beach thing several times and yes i get all kinds of gawkers comming and trying to help me and they are mystified when i flush them away. lol.. i got sick of that though and hauled it blocked it and painted it. i still get barnacles though, but after ten mins of some heavy throttle action, most of them get washed off. it only does about 15 mph at first but gets back to its 35 after a bit of struggling.

as for the 5000 rpm red line... umm, im not really sure of the rotating assy. that you have iside that thing. but id say that is a bit high for a big block. i dont run over 4200 at all. about 36- 3800 is where i sit. and thats plenty of power. i think my 460 redline is at 47 or so. but thats with a double roller chain and roller valve train, reconditioned forged h beams, ported heads, and performance ex manifolds. also hogged the intake to fit the head bores alot better, 10:1 ratio and a step up cam. its at about 430-450hp right now.
anything above that involves a cam thats way to hot for a boat, which is not good for reliability or performance. especially the variety of operating range curves it sees.

red lining a big block in neutral is a bomb waiting to explode. just like you may have expierenced, especially if the guy just said that "the engine is oh 475 horse." theres about a thousand extra bucks to get 150hp out of that stock 325-330 hp 460.if i had a 475 hp big block id have the papers to prove it. other than that i wouldnt take that thing over 4200 under a load. cruise it at 3800 and never get above 3200 in neutral. and as for that knocking noise?? hmm might have some trouble now buddie. who knows maybe youll see inside and youll see the parts that are so called high performance. or maybe youll see it full of engine honey!!!! i wouldnt be surprised

MAN YOU GUYS ARE BRUTAL. I see im not the only wise *** on the board. anyway i guess it could have somthing to do with the barnacles. maybe its the fact that my johnson is so big, the boat cant move with all that weight. or maybe my fat girlfirend has something to do with it. thats the last time i let that fat b1tch on my vessel. have a great week gents. ill be scraping sh1t.

Hey Barnacle Bird,

Interesting how you seem to believe what you were told by seller, but not those that are trying to help you get this thing running right. You may be suffering from, "Post purchase cognitive dissonance" fancy way of saying, your hoping you didn't get screwed. Did you sea trial this thing?

Nothing brutal here...but certainly worth a laugh. Snuf out that short fuse, you brought most of this on yourself...5000 RPM in netural, top speed of 15 with 4 people on the boat, guy told me it had 475 HP!

Give us an update after you,
1) Clean the freakin hull.
2) Check the prop.
3) Confirm the motor is still in one piece and running correctly.
4) Confirm the drive is still in one piece and running correctly.

Motor honey, fat chicks, give-me-a-break :D ! Believe who you want, your still only going 15 MPH at WOT! Nuff said.

Spike, stop bringing up these old threads. There are enough problems to go around with the new threads.
