I have a 92 ford 2.3 omc in a 17' open bow ski. It cranks and revs fine out of the water, put it in the water and it cranks and runs fine until about 3/4 throttle then it starts to bog down and cut out. Heres a list of things ive done to try too correct the problem... set the timing, points and dwell to specs, rebuilt the carb, replaced the plugs, wires, condenser, coil and both fuel filters. I drained the tank of 6 month old gas and replaced it with fresh. Ive ran the boat about three times but no changes. If anyone can give me directions It would be greatly appreciated. :D

I would start by rechecking the float setting on your carb. Sounds like it's running out of fuel.

Here are most of the possibilities.

Here is how to check your boats fuel system for leaks and plugs that will cause your problem.

http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=015221#000000

the fuel level in the bowl is determined the the correct float height.needle and seat could be sticking

Re: engine bogs after 3/4 throttle. HELP!!!!!!!

update.... I disconnected the gas line from the fuel water seperator and connected a container full of fresh gas fed by a clear hose, I found that the gas was not being pulled to the carb at a constent rate it was being pulled in surges with alot of bubbles at the connection of the clear hose to the nipple. Does this mean that I have a leak at that particular connection, the rest is plumbed with metal lines. Oh yeah the boat had the same symptoms as before but they were actually worse.

When you rebuilt the carb did you actually measure the float drop? that is critical.
Sounds like the fuel pump needs to be tested.

Siline - 3/4 throttle gives us some information, but can you tell us what your engine RPM (or range of RPM) is at that throttle setting? This can help to separate a fuel starvation issue from one of maladjusted timing or a bad ignition module, etc.

Was there not a spec sheet that came with the carb kit?
Post the carb model and maybe someone can look it up.I'm out of state and my books are at home..

Re: engine bogs after 3/4 throttle. HELP!!!!!!!

here is exactly what happens when I try to take off. From an idle I floor the throttle it starts to pick up speed until the rpms reach about 3500 then comes the bogging, I can then pull back on the throttle about a 1/4 of the way and it smoothes out then i can start too trim it up and get rpms too about 4300 but no more without more throttle and bogging. 4300 rpms trimmed up on smooth water = 28 mph with one or two people, you add 2 more people it takes about 400 yards too even get on plane, then mph is about 18. Im going adjust the float in the carb too see if that helps. Any more suggestions.

Siline - have you rechecked your timing? Also, you didn't mention changing the cap and rotor in your initial comments about what your have replaced - how do they look?

I know everyone else is chiming in on the potential fuel delivery issue - I'm just trying to balance it out with attention to making sure your ignition is squared away.
