Hello, I have a question hopefully someone can help me out with. I have a 1988 Bayliner with a 2.3l and a cobra drive. When I started it today for the first time this year I had it hooked to muffs. Once the engine was running I noticed a small stream of water coming out around the large screw on the port side of the outdrive. This would be the screw that fastens to the backing plate that is inside. Will it hurt anything by having water squirting out? I checked the screw and its tight.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Jeff

Re: Screw on Drive is leaking

It is on the upper housing. Its a large screw, and from everything I have read here by searching the forums its the screw that has a backing plate on it. And if you remove the screw the backing plate drops down inside the drive. I can tell the screw is threading into something by backing the screw out a turn then re-tightening it.
When the engine is running there is a real fine stream coming out from around the screw.
I would post I pic, but I dont knwo how.
Thanks
Jeff

The screw he's talking about is item 14 (down in the bottom left corner) OMC Upper in this picture, it should have a couple of o rings but they could be missing. Short of taking it right out maybe you can loosen it off enough to get some 4200 around it, I don't think the leak will cause you a problem being so small, you could run it and keep an eye on the temp gauge.

Re: Screw on Drive is leaking

Thanks guys for the input. It looks like it may of had some sealer around it before. Anyone know how far I can back that screw out before it unthreads from that backing plate? I cant tell from the diagram how long the screw it. It looks pretty short. I may just leave it and keep a eye on the temp. It may of been leaking last year also but I never ran it on the muffs.
Thanks again.
Jeff
