I just took over a 28' Bayliner with a 5.71 Brava SN# 0D605188. There was a part that looks to be someting like a starter or something that was laying the bilge, but still connected via a red cable to the engine. The front was broken off and reviled what looked to be some type of a gear. Any idea of what this could be? The boat has been idle for 2 years. Don't have a manual yet.

Appreciate any help.

Re: 5.71 Brava

Thanks. Is that a pretty easy repair? BTW. It was on the starboard side.

If the starter is broken off...
I would make sure the motor turns...
Put a big socket and breaker bar on
the center bolt in the vibration
damper and see if you can spin the motor.
(might want to pull plugs and add oil to cyl)
2 years sitting?
If the motor is frozen, someone tried the starter
"crack" starter is in the bilge.
So no new starter is going to help.
You could have a serious problem.

On changing starter:
if you have room to get to the bolts and
room to slip a new one in, not difficult.
First have to remove broken flange "housing"
of old starter.

Thanks- I think the "Serious" scenario is probably the case. The boat is in super shape other then that. It is bretty much free to me. Are we talking a whold new engine. I might just unloade now.
