Rochester carburetor question

Just finished replacing my rochester 4 bbl on a 1995 remanufactured 305. Everything lines up fine except...On the old carb there was a some type of vacaum pipe right above the fuel intake of the carb that ran to the fuel pump. No such line on the new carb. Does anyone know what that line is or does and can I just plug the vacaum line from the fuel pump?
Nothing is ever easy with an old boat.

Re: Rochester carburetor question

Is it a clear tube?
Its a fuel line that vents fuel from the pump if it fails..
Is the new carb a marine carb?
I don't think blocking it off is a good idea.
Maybe Don S or Rodbolt can give you a solution..

Re: Rochester carburetor question

it was purchased from what I think is a reputable remanufacturer. It was sold to me as a marine carb.

Thanks Gary,
I also changed the fuel pump. I guess the new fuel pump has this saftey feature, the old fuel pump did not. There is a plugged vent line at the rear of the carb, I wonder if I can vent the fuel pump to it.

NOT if there is vacuum there with the engine running. Many run to a small tube that goes through the flame arrestor.

Re: Rochester carburetor question

Thanks Dave,
I am reluctant to just plug the clear hose into some line that I am not sure what it is. The vent on the back of the carb looks small and is not at the base but rather at the top. I do not have any line to attach to it. There was no such vent on my old carb. Can I plug the clear line and just check it regularly to make sure it is not full of fuel?

NO NO NO,,,,,It MUST be hooked up so if the pump diaphram burst it will put the fuel into the throat of the carb.

Is this vent line at the top edge of the rear of the carb, like the one in the pic? If so hook it up there.

Re: Rochester carburetor question

thanks for all the help guys. One more question...why is there only one terminal on the electric choke. I know I am supposed to power it with 12 "keyed" volts but why is there no neg terminal?

Re: Rochester carburetor question

It's grounded thru the carb housing. No external ground wire is needed.

Re: Rochester carburetor question

I thought the carb gasket would prevent the carb from being grounded
