Rochester 2GC Rebuild kit--do I need the pump check ball?

I just used a Sierra kit to rebuild a Rochester 2GC two-barrel. The engine runs much better, and the original bogging problem seems to be solved when I'm running on muffs, but I'm still not getting much fuel out of the throttle pump. I cleaned it up and smoothed out the walls, so it should be working properly. I also noticed that in the instructions for the kit and in Seloc, there's a reference to an aluminum check ball that sits in the pump well. This carb didn't have one when I took it apart so I assumed it didn't need one. Was I wrong? How can you tell if it needs the check ball?

Second question--the fuel filter had no spring behind it when I pulled it out. Should this carb have a spring that keeps tension on the filter and presses it against the inlet?

Thanks for all the advice.

I put the ball in my Mercarb, have not noticed any difference in operation. If the filter spring is not in there might be a chance of trash bypassing the filter.

Cheb, did you soak the carb in carb cleaner or just clean the carb?

Without the check ball the fuel returns to the bowl insted of squirting from the accelerator jets. As long as you don't open the throttle too quickly it will run fine but it should have one.
You can probably buy any used Rochester carb at a junk yard cheap and the ball should work fine. If not, some of us have piles of Rochester parts laying around and can send you one.

Thanks all.

Yes, bamadave, I soaked it in cleaner and blew out all of the passages. There were a few clogged passages in the venturi cluster, but overall it was clean.

I have the ball that came with the Sierra kit. I believe I'll just drop it in there and see what it does. I don't imagine it can do any harm down there.

Another hot sunny day spent fiddling with things. . .

The presence of the check ball made a major difference in the way mine ran upon hard acceleration.

It was the check ball! The thing works great now.

One final carb question about the pump. The kit came with two springs of equal length, one bigger than the other. I used the bigger of the two on the plunger part of the pump, but wasn't sure about the other one. Right now, I have a new spring on the plunger, and the old plunger spring under the plunger to return it to position. Is that going to work, or is it necessary to use the slightly smaller one that came with the kit? (I don't mean the one that looks like a ball-point pen spring.) Anyone know whether the way I have it will cause any problems?

Thanks
