cutting up deck

not there but if i have to (getting ideas now,for worst case) cut up deck a 1802 w/a trophy to get at gas tank. has anyone here ever done that with this type of boat? i thought the hull could be seperated but was told no. the deck had to be cut or transom cut off. really like the boat its been my project for a yr now. am worried about support after the section is cut and how to reinforce. then need to make it look half way decent. its has an alum tank i know its 10yrs old so want to be prepped. was thinking of checking with the schools to see if they let students do it. i know back in the 70s late 80s you could have things done at cost and students get experience. anyway am looking for some insite from all who wish to respond.

did i ask one of those trick questions on a bayliner. i like the boat and wished they would have installed a removable hatch, but they didnt, so am asking you guys thanx

can you get a set of blueprints for the boat?<br />at least you won't cut something by mistake<br />like a stringer. maybe it's better to leave it<br />and get a real good filter, unless you think it's<br />leaking gas <br />if you had a diagram of how it is put together,<br />at least you would have a place to start.<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.

2K BOAT,<br /><br />What I would do is cut a 6 to 8 inch circular hole above the tank. You can then put a deck plate in if you decide to abandon the fuel tank project.<br /><br />This will allow you to have a good look around under the deck, to see what you are dealing with.

Good Idea Djohn,<br /><br />Watch out for the tank when you cut the inspection hole!<br /><br />Don't know if this will help but....<br /><br />Looks like Bayliner didn't improve on their accessibility.<br /><br />My 2001 Bayliner Capri has a poly tank, and it's completely glassed in the floor. There is a small access where you can at least remove the sending unit.<br /><br />My tank sites right on the bottom of the boat for the most part. I have a small drainage tube that runs from the ski locker, under the tank, and to the bilge.<br /><br />Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly, but can't you just cut (if you have to) the floor at the sides of the tank and simply lift it out?<br />Do you have a deck insert in the way?<br /><br />I got lucky on my project, as the insert sat up high enough to BARELY get the tank out. It still took my 3 ton crane to do it too! Steel tanks are a *@!$!& !!!<br /><br />I don't know the Trophy's at all. Never been in one in fact...<br /><br />H.

its an alum tank, its right between the fishbox and begining of ob motor well ? anyway there is nothing between top of tank and deck. i checked that out before i installed motor. 1in to 2in clearance. if i cut it out with like a roto zip, how easy is it going to be re-enforce the edges and reuse the cut out section so it wont look so tacky. say what you want about a bayliner, this boat rides great and hence my name it was well worth it. ive researched tank sealers and an access hatch in both tank and deck is a must, unless i pump 50 gals in then pump out 6k easy. i was hoping that someone has done this before on this type of boat. they only had the alum. tank in this model for 1 to 2yrs. easiest to me would be to seperate the top from bottom. the area is so small that i dont want a trip hazard. even boc cant answer this one.

2K BOAT,<br /><br />my comments about installing a deck plate were merely to get a better look. A 6-8" hole is not going to make any difference in the integrity of the hull/deck. As long as you do not cut a stringer. These deck plates are held in by about 8-10 screws and will be as strong as the deck surrounding it.

i saved that to my favorites. thanx <br />djohns ive looked for a big pre-made access hatch and havent been able to find them roughly a 3 X 4 ft. the deck on these 1802's is pretty small.<br />has anyone ever seperated a 2 piece hull before?

You need to determine where the 2 main inside stringers are. Use a skill saw with the depth set at about 1/2" you can allways set it deeper and go over it again. Roto zip will need a carbide bit and will be slower and harder to handle. You can either cut right down the middle of the stringer or right down the inside edge of it. eithe way you will probally have to glass in a rim for the hatch to be fasten back down to. You might be able to use the same piece you cut out with a littl glass work on both the cut out edge and the edge your leaving.

MY old boat has 6 inch inspection ports installed over the filler/vent connections and also the sending unit. I would think yours would also. in any case I would surly install the ports if i were re-doing the boat. makes it easy to replace hoses and sending units, oh, also a port over the feed hose fitting.....good luck........

I cut the deck out of a Bayliner Trophy Fisherman some years back to replace a leaking aluminum tank. Cut at an angle planning to just let the deck drop back into place on strip fiberglass. Shallow cuts at first to make sure I wasn't cutting into anything serious. My skills at this kind of job weren't too good and before it was over, I was wishing I hadn't done it. Never could get it to look right again. Of course it didn't help that evrything underneath was waterlogged and wood rotten. Saw the guy on Shipshape TV do it years later and he made it look easy. He cut inspection holes like the guys are talking about to locate his stringers, etc. Wound up re-placing a lot of them. Good luck.

for the time being got a pontoon 20gal tank am going to use above deck til i figure it out. mite even get a 18 to 20 gal plastic porti.<br />the tank extends under splash well and sits against fish box. dont know if angle would be sufficent to pull that 52 gal tank out. need blue prints of boat got any ideas on where to get them?????????????

i worked for a sister company of bayliner for 18 yrs. and we keep prints to all the models we did in customer service dept. bayliner may do the same thing and could probably fax you a print of this area and could give you a breif discription of how it was put together . they may also have a solution for you . i know i would get calls like this from time to time when i was in the boatbuilding world .

they could possible have a tank , unless it is a one model tank for that specific model , they should have something close . roto cast might have something in plastic, also fla. marine is another source that manufactures tanks .
