I have a 16' large jon with console steering that I got for me and the boy, but alas, no motor. Been looking but can/t seem to find the right one. Need around 35-50hp,with controls if possible, the transom is 21 inches. Anyone have any suggestions, or one they would like to part with? Hopefully economically. We both thank you.

Do as you like, but anything more than 25 hp on a jon is dangerous....it'll be a v-8 strapped to a shingle, a very unstable shingle at high speeds. Lots of good used motors on ebay.

It had a 60 yamaha on it before. very overpowered, but with a 6 foot beam and 16 ft 3 inches it shoud take around 35-40. a 25 would be okay too. I don't trust the motors on ebay as much as i would from a member of the forum.

ErikW.. Good used motors in that size range are difficult to come by at times around here... Believe me, I know... Keep an eye out, and the right one will pop up...

Get on the phone and call around to some dealers.. Sometimes they get trade-in engines, ect...

Try Boat trader yet? The newspaper classifieds? Show&sell? Bargin trader?

The Florida Mariner sometimes has a few in the classifieds.. It is a free publication usually available at places like Boaters world, Boat US, and some of the smaller marine retailers and bait & tackle shops..

Good luck in your search...

Forgot to add...check out the Florida chapter of this group: www.aomci.org
Not that you want an antique motor, but these guys might help you find what you want...ie. many years experience in your area.

Yes I have and like what I see. But I have one burning question before I buy one. What is the Max rated HP allowed on my boat? the plate at the back is half gone and the rating is the part missing. 1988 Sea Nyph 16' 3" long about a 70" beam and a 21" transom with right hand console steering. Thank you.

Lowe makes Sea Nymph now... I checked their web site and a Lowe 16'-70" beam flatbottom is rated for 35hp..

One of their 16' models is rated 35hp tiller/ 50hp remote steering...

For what it's worth, in my opinion, split the HP difference and go with a 40HP with your console steering...

Have a look at Lowe's web site and see if you can match your boat up with one of theirs..
http://www.loweboats.com/fishboats/utility/jonboat/

Re: Hunting for o/b power

a good friend of mine as a very similar boat. Generation-3 (lowes) john boat. the ol' boy uses her for running nets on the river. last week brought in one net with over 1000lbs in it. by the end of the run, the 40Hp Merc was barely enough.

Oh yah, he does not have a councel. just the tiller.

I wouldn't consider smaller then the 40. Or for that matter, anything over a 40. Guess I'd go with the 40.
