Brad1963, Stainless or monel (think i spelled that right) will not rust but will cost more.. personally, I think galvanized deck screws will last long enough.....and cost less......hope this helps....good luck.......

Stainless or brass, stainless is my first choice. Rub the screw with a wet block of soap before screwing into place. That way it'll drive through the timber fibres easier and last longer!
I like the square drive type they have available these days, they drive in easier than slotted screws and my clutch on the driver gets the torque right every time.
Ross

I used well over 300 stainless screws on my project, and at about $35, I didn't think that was too much to spend for the peace of mind, but Galvanized will work as well.

I always use stainless, the cost difference in a project is essentially negligible

go to the shore, look at a bulkhead

those are galvanized bolts holding it together

notice they are breaking into rust colored chunks?

stainless wont do that

nuff said

Stainless gets my vote.

If you buy them in bulk, they're not that expensive.

I would advise against using galvinized deck screws. They are basiclly a galvanized sheet rock screw and have little shear strength. Since there is some flex in a boat hull there will be some flexing in the floor. These will tend to shear off after some time. If you have ever used them you will know that it is not that hard to twist the heads off when they hit some resistance.
