I put a new fuel sender and fuel gauge on my boat but it is not working (gauge. what could my problem be, or what should I check?

Re: fuel sender

You should check (for most marine, teleflex gauges):

a) Proper connection of cables at the sender: signal and ground.

b) Proper connection at the gauge: make sure it is connected to ground; make sure it is connected to the "A" post of the ignition switch (so it receives 12 Volts when the key is turned to the first step which is the accessory power-up). On the gauge, this connection is generally marked as "I" for ignition. Then check that the sender signal is connected to gauge (at the "S" terminal on gauge).

c) If the gauge has a lamp for the dial, make sure it is connected to the ground on one side and to 12V coming from the lights switch. It is good to extract the lamp and check contacts for corrosion.

When the gauge is properly powered (it is grounded and it is receiving +12V on the "I" terminal), if you disconnect the sender unit cable from the "S" terminal, the reading should be below "empty". When you touch the "S" terminal with a ground cable, it should go to above "Full".

I'm assuming the sender is OK because you said it is new. However, you can make a resistance check if you want to be sure. Go to http://www.tflx.com/pdf/marfue~1.pdf for specific instructions on the resistance check.

Hope this helps.

Re: fuel sender

Thanks Kesh, after doing a little more investigating it seems that I overlooked a ground wire. Works like a champ. Appreciate the help.

Re: fuel sender

My new sender is not working either. How do I put another ground wire on it to be sure its grounded. It shows full and I know it is 3\4. Thanks, Dead Eye

Re: fuel sender

Dead Eye

Run a wire from the sender ground terminal to a bolt on the engine block. This will ground it for sure if you suspect it's a ground problem. You could run one temporaily and see what happens. Normally, it will read empty if there is no ground. Re-read Kesh's post again and make sure you have it all wired up right at the sender and gauge. If none of that works, you may have a defective sender or gauge and he explains how to test it in his post.
