Adding a Ski Locker

First off, I am pretty new to boating. I have a fair amount of experience mechanicaly and with fiberglass. I have a 1989 18ft Sunbird Bowrider with an I/O 4.3L Cobra outdrive. This boat is in good shape mechanicaly and the hull needed some TLC, but most of thats been redone. My problem is a lack of storage. The boat does not have an in floor ski locker. I have seen the same model with this option and was wondering if one could be added without major problems. I am in the middle of re-doing the interior which includes new carpet. I was thinking of drilling a small inspection hole about where it should be located and inserting a bore scope to see if there are any problems I might run into. If anyone has had any experience with doing this or anyone that might know the do's and dont's or even tell me this is not worth messing with, I would appreciate any advice. Also, does anyone know of a good hatch cover and liner supplier?? Thanks!!

As for the hatch and liner, I have used Bomar hatches in the past with good results. However, I don't think they make a liner or hatch big enough for a ski locker.

I've seen used teak hatches on e-bay in the $50.00 range from time to time. You may find the stringers are already set up for the locker as an option if your luckey.

av8tor <br />I have seen many people install ski lockers. Havent seen liners for them though. (that doesn't mean someone doesn't make them) The ones I have seen, the people just fiberglassed in a block of wood (towards the stern) to keep the skis from sliding aft and also let rain water drain under the block.<br />Another option (not as clean) but there used to be a company that made ski holders that fit in "Fish-On" rod holders bases.<br /><br />You can order a ski locker hatch from almost any brand of boat, dealers parts department.
