Hey thanks, 18r, I needed to find a place to put my yet to be repainted exhaust manifolds. Wouldn't want them to start rusting up before I get to painting them. Kitchen center island seems like a good dry place. :D :D

Mike, the jugs were a foam saving measure. Also foam weighs 2 lb per cu ft. Air weighs nothing.

You should read JasonJ's foaming proceedure. I did, but did not follow it for the first half. I will for the second half.

I’ve tried it. You’ll have better luck trying to get Kerry to take a position on an issue.

From time to time I’ve managed to keep an inflatable dingy in the living room but only because I insist on sitting in it to watch tv. Didn’t know why visitors look at me funny until I found out woman was forward-marketing a canned story she concocted about Noah and the great flood.

Re: Putting foam in

Will post some pictures but I need to mount fuel tank. Got another post going for that. :) Also I need two more supports epoxied, that takes two-three days. Man I hate when you get going and find you need just 1 more thing to do. :(

Realgun, there is always one more thing to do. I have had one more thing to do ever since I laughingly thought I was done with my project. I won't be done until I die or sell the damn thing....

Re: Putting foam in

Very informative discussion on foam. This is my project: http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/lcrayne/my_photos I am finally at the point where the next step is foaming under the floor. I bought 2 8 lb kits from American Micro Industries, Inc. for a total of 16 lbs. I calculate I need about 12 lbs. Have screwed and glued front and back floor panels in place. Plan to tip the boat and try to pour the front and back full. Will the open ends provide relief if I insert too much? The last step will to glue and screw the center panel down, drill holes and pour foam. Two additional Questions: The weater is getting cold here in Western PA and the boat is in an unheated garage. 1) If I heat the garage up to about 70 degrees with kerosene heatings, will the fumes from the foam explode the garage. 2) Where do you get pumps to accurately dispense equal parts of the material. Can't imagine trying to pour out of full gallon cans with any degree of precision.

Re: Putting foam in

Bourbon, the open ends will be adequate but I'm curious how you will tilt the boat forward to foam the forward sections of the floor. You want the poured foam to reach all the way back to the back of the cavity before it starts to expand.

In addition to warming the garage, if you have a boat cover and an electric space heater, use them. I had a 70 deg day and still used the heater. The temperature was up to 90 deg under the cover, inside the boat and I still only got about 60% of the advertized expansion. Also heat heat everything long enough to get the actual hull up to temperature. Mine may have been too cold.

No need to worry about fumes, there were none. Don't mix anymore than a total quart at a time. Wait 15 minutes then pour the next batch right on top of the last. Get yourself a couple of 16 oz cottage cheese tubs or equivelant, dedicate each one to parts A and B. You can reuse those repeatedly. Then have a number of 2 liter or better juice bottles and stir sticks, cut the tops off and pour in each premeasured part and mix. You'll only get to use your mix jugs may twice before they become too messy to mix the next batch in.

Good luck.

Re: Putting foam in

All this comes at such a great time for me because I just acquired, for free, a great flat bottom aluminum Bass Tracker which, when I pulled the carpet realized has all the problems that have been posted here: Saturated foam, completely rotted out wood and carpet. My question, and it may be an ingnorant one, is since this boat has no financial investment to me, isn't foam primarily a safety feature in case the boat capsizes? The boyance of the foam has nothing to do with floating the boat. If my physics are correct, it's the displacement of the hull.

Bourbon, you definately do not want to do your pour all at once. Foam expands in all directions at a fixed rate. You could end up with is all in one area, blowing out the floor or bulging the hull. You pour in smaller increments, it will fill and expand without causing damage.

Tibb,
Yes, you are right...the foam only help float the boat if you are capsized...and if that happens in the middle of a lake I'll bet you would be glad it was there. ;)

However, I think most of the people doing the foam on this forum are doing to prevent water from collecting and causing rot.

I am kind of concerned about what happens if you don't have the foam contact the flooring...and what happens if you do..but that will need to be in its own thread.

Just my $0.02 worth,
Joe

I'm also curious as to why most of you are replacing the stringers and decking with more wood, particularly pine, when other products such as composite wood, recycled rubber/plastic boards such as what is used for playground equipment, or even cedar which is far less likely to rot. I realize the composite and rubber is a bit heavier and pricier, but negligibly.

However, I think most of the people doing the foam on this forum are doing to prevent water from collecting and causing rot.
Um no we are doing it for safty first and structure last. I do not want my kids to drown cause that did not have a boat to sit in. ( they also have lifejackets as do I)

I dont need to add the foam I can just put the floor back and you might never know however, I know better than to do a Halfa$$ed job. Besides it does provide needed structure and when I go over that wake at full throttle and catch air(in my dreams)I want to know I can come back around and do it again. :) The lake I go to gets wind waves almost ever afternoon about 3 feet high and close together don't need a broken boat in that.

Tibb - Wood is fine, readily available, and easy to work with. When you read about the repairs on these forums you are witness to a quality of work well in excess of the original manufacture’s. Note the other threads/discussions on the use of penetrating epoxy to saturate the wood with a synthetic that will resist rot well into the next millennium as well as create a better bonding surface.

Boomyal may be an exception. I have it on good authority the Discovery Channel is sending a crew to film his foaming and drainage design and methodologies for a future episode of Modern Marvels. :D

Re: Putting foam in

Well I finally! Put the floor and foam in the boat.
See

038044.JPG

Rock holds down floor here (no screws yet)
038046.JPG

Only problem I had was the foam went off early on the last piece. :)

It worked fine just had to hold the bow up.
Once the first area was in no problems. The next piece of floor went in with screws, foam was stired for 25 seconds and just dumped in the gap it ran down and 5 minutes later started to come towards the opening. and any gaps in floors that were less than 1/8" :) . The last peice was tricky.
I predrilled the screws then backed them out.
I poured the left side, and then the right. The right side got an explosion on me and fingers.
Foam is HOT and very very sticky!!! And I am still tring to get it off my fingers. All in all It worked well but if I was going to do it again i would have drilled a hole for the last piece only.

Hey Boomyal,

Why the plastic bottles? Trying to save foam, or some other reason?

Mark.

Re: Putting foam in

Boat washes up on the shore in Hawaii, locals call the police. Office comes and notices a large hole in the side of the boat with a bottle. Opens the bottle and finds a note.....If you have found my boat please call John J. Boomyal at 555-1212, Vancover Canada...reward is offered. :)
