paint choices for fiberglass duckboat

I have an old Sears Gamefisher 12.5 foot fiberglass boat. It currently has a new paint job of the ugliest bright teal color you can imagine. For some reason, ducks don't like this color so I am trying to cover up the last owner's paint. He used an oil-based paint that apparently was applied and waxed within the last 6 months.

My question is how do I go about producing a long lasting dull (flat) base paint that I can camo with spray paint? One story I get is to wipe it down with acetone, then apply an oil-based flat paint. Another paint guru said that this would not hold on the outside, nor would the spray paint hold on the oil-based paint. Who is telling the story I want to hear?

Any suggestions on application? Rent a commercial sprayer? Please do not tell me to "get a wagner."

Any ideas on a good color to use for base paint while hunting in dark water and light reeds?

Thanks,
Geary

Pettit makes a "dull grass green".. It's an alkyd enamel, flat green color, quite similar to what you'd find on an aluminum jon boat.. Perfect base for a spray can camo job... :D

Rustoleum (my favorite) is also a good choice. And easy to find... Huge color selection too.. Flat, gloss, you name it.. Actually, Rustoleum just came out with a new primer specifically for fiberglass and plastics... ;)

Anywhooo.. I'd break out the sander and strip down what's on there, cause you really don't know what kind of paint it is.. The reason, sometimes different paints react funny to each other.. I'd take it all the way down to the gelcoat..

Pick a paint manufacturer and use all the products they recomend like specific primers, thinners, reducers, ect.. Most paints are engineered to work as a "system".. Stray from the "system", problems are likely..

You won't need a spray outfit for a flat finish.. Don't really need a spray rig for a fine finish either.. Foam rollers will be fine...

Good Luck.. :)

The Only "Trick" is to Sand All of the areas to be Painted...............
220grit paper should do very well.... Just make Sure all areas are Well Scuffed........
No basecoat of primer is needed... Just use the Flat paint, of the colors of your choice.....

Rustoleum is My Favorite too......
As long as it's been Sanded, It'll Stick.........
Rustoleum comes in All the "Flat" colors that you'll want or need..........
A couple of rattle cans should be enough to do it up.......
OK, Maybe a Few Cans........
