Hi Guys,
My Formula is painted with Imron by a pro paint shop. I need to repaint just the top portion of transom. The reason is - minor ckrack needs to be filled and painted.
Please share your opinion on what other paint will bond to Imron.
I painted my other boat with Introlux Topside. It is too soft. Which paint is as hard as Imron?

Thank you,
Lenny

Have 'em use Imron again. It will match better than anything else since its what ya got on it now.

There are agents, often called 'bonding clear' that will soften the area around the repair so the new coat will blend in and stick like its supposed to. Then they can buff away the 'halo' around the edges of where it was repainted after its dry and 'set'.

Re: Imron paint

Ed,
I appreciate your reply. The thing is - I need to be able to paint the patch myself. I cannot transport the boat to the paint shop.

Where can I purchase Imron paint? Maybe I will try to spray it myself.

Thanks.

Ok then, paint it yourself with Imron. The stuff isn't magic and in fact you can get spray-like results with careful rolling and tipping. The key, as with any painting is in the prep. Also of vital importance with these expensive paints is getting the thinner right. After that its not bad at all.

In your case on a transom I'd just repaint the whole thing rather than try to blend in a patch. A blend at the turn to the hull sides will be much less noticable than running across the generally flat transom.

Thom

ThomWV:

Have you personally rolled and brushed Imron?

Re: Imron paint

I "rolled and brushed" Introlux Brightside Poly paint. Results were nice, but the next coat I did spraying. Spraying yields much better finish then roll and brush. I used a foam roller and a 3" brush I paid $35 for. I don't think Imron could be rolled and brusshed nicely.
My boat was painted with Imron by a place where they have a spay booth. As I was told by a former owner of the boat, once it was painted, they placed the boat in the drying room where they bring the temperature to a certain degree for Imron to set properly.
As a matter of fact, when I spray painted my previous boat with Introlux I noticed that after 2 weeks of curing the surface was soft. Even 6 month after painting I was able to leave a mark on the pain with a finger nail.
As I said before, my formula is painted with Imron. Imron is so hard that if I take a coin and scratch it It will leave a mark but will leave a dirt mark that could be buffed off, not a deep scratch.

Like prev. said, Imron isn't majic. But in the scheme of things, it is pretty close to the top quality wise of the commonly available auto paints. It is a very good version of the polyurethane Enamels.

If you're careful, you can spray it. Get a respirator--- or this stuff could put ya in the hospital. The catalysits are made with the cyanide family of chemicals.

IN fact, the higher end materials are easier and more forgiving than the cheapie stuff. If ya screw it up-- wait a day or so, block sand it, and shoot it again,,,, and again, and again, if ya have to.

Just wait till the temp. is above about 65 or so. It'll sure work if its much colder, but it'll be easier and simpler for you (at this stage of the game) if you wait till its sort of warm and there is no wind. Even if you have a garage to do it in, the wind will always blow trash inside with you.

Its a DuPont product. look in the phone book or whatever for 'auto paint supply' or 'Body shop supplies' in the automotive section. Sometimes Aircraft supply places carry it,,,, but as expensive as it is, they usually charge more than a auto body shop supplier does. Usually in the Yellow Pages, under the auto parts section, you'll see a DuPont logo--- they'll fix ya up.

And for what you're doing, I'd expect it'll cost ya around $100 or a little over for everyting you'll need. High end Urethanes like that run about $40-50 a quart or more--- I sell some PPG stuff that goes out at over $110 a quart and that's even discounted--, and the catalyst should run about $20-30 or so.

3M makes a decent respirator for about 20 bucks or so. I spray a car or a boat once or twice a year and use the 3M disposable respirator with good faith & results. The paint store should have them too.

Re: Imron paint

I've rolled and tipped Awl Grip, another of the 2-part premium paints. Its really not difficult at all. We did our hull last year and didn't even tip it, just rolled it on like this:

You could do the same thing on your transom and then just do the blend at the corners.

Thom
