I pulled most of my engine ,,then took it to a shop and had them pull the block.and upper outdrive.......while at the shop the guy called and told me the whole transom was rotted and probobly the stringers and floor ...it was very sad ...i took back my boat and a week later took it to a fiberglass specialist ,who inspected it , he said the stringers and floor are healthy ,but there is rot 6 inches around the out drive mounting plate ,he proposes to cut out the 6 inches of rot and some additional area into the good stuff ,and then layer in a patch fix with marine grade and polyester resin ,,,i insisted [due to readings on this forum] that he use epoxy resin ,he said it would cost more .....he will be calling me back in a couple days with a quote , he mentioned between 500$ to 800$ ...im wondering if i shouldent try to get the whole transome replaced [ being the right way?] or if this is an appropriate fix...

Re: patching transom

No matter how good the patch, a single hunk of transom wood is going to be stronger. Patches can do well if done right. I would ask for quotes for both options and weigh those against the value of the boat. Also keep in mind any mechanical and cosmetic repairs that are going to add to that pricetag.

What kind of a boat, powerplant and year are we talking about? I would agree with WW if we are talking about lotsa forces on the transom - - on the other hand if you have a 12' skiff with a 9.9 - -

If your "guy" is good a patch should be quite workable for most applications and the $5-800 seems not out of sight. I had a complete transom job done on my 23'er with twin OB a couple of years ago for $3K.

Re: patching transom

$500-$800 sounds very reasonable. If the guy knows boat construction there is no reason a cutout around the hole won't work. There are various methods that will work fine...pins, overlaps, backing blocks, etc. Epoxy will glue it back as strong as the original. A full transom rebuild will likely be way more money.

With an Outdrive you really dont need that strong a transom as you not hanging/pushing on it with the motor like an Outboard. It just needs to be solid.
