I need a windshield!

I have a 1950s Traveler Comet. It's a 14 ft. runabout and had a tinted plexiglass windshield. Unfortunately in a storm this past year it was broken. I have nothing left of it now. Does anyone have an idea of what I should do to get a windshield for it? There is NO information on this boat on the internet, and I'm really not sure where to look for this.

Thank you!!

Re: I need a windshield!

Welcome to iBoats!

Sorry to hear of your windshield woes. I know from experience that replacement windshields are a problem for old boats. If your windshield was made by Taylor Made, you might be able to use the replacement they offer. They used to offer three models, but now I believe they only offer one. They are about $300.00 plus shipping. Look them up on the web and call them for information on replacements.

Depending on your windshield design, you may be able to cut polycarbonate (brand name Lexan) plastic to fit. I did this for my Taylor Made windshield and wrote an article on it. You can read it here: Windshield Article

I had the old plexiglass to make a template from, in your case if none of the original windshield is left, then you have to cut poster board to fit in the old frame and then use it as a template on the polycarbonate.

Another option is to call the local plastics suppliers/fabricators found in the yellow pages to get a price on them making it. When I called the locals around me, to my surprise they had all made replacement plastic windshields for boats. I got estimates that were in the hundreds of dollars.

If you use the search function and search this forum for 'windshield' you will find links to other folks who have made their own.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out. We really like to read the follow up posts.

Mark.

Thanks! Funny, I was looking at pictures of your boat earlier. You did an awesome job on that. The windshield looks really good also, so that may be a good idea for me.

Glad you like my MFG, working on these boats is a lot of fun, even if it does take a lot of time.

You are right about not finding any info on your boat on the net. I did a few searches and found zip.

Post a photo or two I would really like to see it.

Re: I need a windshield!

First thing is to replace the pully and cable with a new rotary cable system by Teleflex. About $130 for the helm and cable. If your motor does not have a steering tube built in, you'll need a few extra parts to complete the connection.

Parts are still available to completely refurbish the pully system you have. But the new rotary cable systems (or rack system) are dead on accurate with no play. Really, really, really nice. And if your steering wheel has the standard 3/4" keyed tapered mount, it will fit any new steering helm.

For seats, the Wise brand have the standard replacement lounge seats at a budget price. Around $150 a piece and it goes up and up from there. Depending on your boats looks and what it originally had, a simple wood bench seat (base and back with a cutout in the middle of the backrest for step-through access) from plywood with marine varnish and flotation cushions will look right for the 50's and early 60's boats.

Pull the old carpet and get some indoor/outdoor from the home centers. Marine carpet is available, depends on how much use it will get and how much you want to spend.

Most all hardware can be replaced with new. If you have some unique pieces to your boat, chrome plating will make them look like new. It is expensive, I spent $80 on two T shaped pieces of steel about 1.5" long a few years ago. Powder coating is a good choice, and cheaper than chrome. Painting is an alternative. All the white pieces on my boat are aluminum or brass and painted with spray epoxy. They have held up great to one season use in salt water.

Look at all the posts on polishing your gel coat before painting. Makes for interesting reading, and you'll find a link to the article I wrote on polishing my boat.

Start compiling a list of Favorites on your PC from the major parts suppliers, like iBboats, Fore and AFt, boaters world, boaters land, overtons, etc. Then you can make a list of all the stuff you want to replace and the cost.

Set yourself a budget. My budget was $5000 for the whole project, including the boat, but $3000 of that was for new motor and trailer.

If you can do simple wiring, it is easy to just gut the boat and make your own wire harness. It is simple, just a few running lights, horn and guages. The rest of the ignition and starting circuit is built in to newer control boxes.

I knew exactly what my boat looked like new, but I made changes to materials (white vinyl instead of wood grain 'contact paper'), different seats (the lounge seats were not in my boat until a year or two later), I added guages and a horn that were not original. The rear cleats are after market, the front are still original. Depends on how close to a pure resoration you want.

Man, I can talk about this stuff all day. Gotta go get some stuff done around the house.

Post some pics and list your objectives and we can give you a better idea of what is practical or not.

Good luck,
Mark

Re: I need a windshield!

iboats.com (the site you are on) is launching a brand new replacement windshield program in partnership with Taylor Made mentioned above by Mark42. This new program will be the only way Taylor Made can help you. Trust me. We have been working with them closely on this for months. Please go to http://www.iboats.com/boat-windshields/ to read more about this program. We hope we can help!

Re: I need a windshield!

Admin5,

I checked out the windshield program link. I have comments for you but when I tried to use the Contact iBoats page, it was not working ("cannot find the page your are looking for" message). Got the same from the email-me link.

I don't want to post my comments in the public forum (no, they are not critcal or derogitory), so please let me know when the Contact Us link is working.

Thanks,

Mark.

Re: I need a windshield!

Mark42,
I just checked everything and the forms seem to be working. I have no idea why it didn't work for you. Please try again. If they still don't work for you I would greatly appreciate it if you give me a call 800-869-1686 x105. We are putting in a great deal of energy and expense into this new program so I am very interested in your comments. Thanks!

Re: I need a windshield!

I can spend as much as I need.Long as my wife keeps buying those damn $500 shoes.Geez.
No Speedsport, huh? Go figure. That just happens to be the one I was going to buy....Really, It does look more like what actually came with the boat, according to the ONE photo I have of an original one.I've got a ton of work to do before I can even think about a windshield, but the info is greaty appreciated.
