ok, here it is. I only need 4-5 more fishing trips before im ripping my boat apart. I have an issue though. 2 weeks ago i found my hull full of water. after draining it and inspecting i found two 2inch cracks in the hull. I sanded them back and applied 2 coats of resin ( sanding in between). After going on the water again, i pulled the bungs and found NO water in hull. Great news!, not quite. After inspection tonight, i noticede the cracks right through the same spots. Whats going on? I want to try some fiberglass sheeting with resin t'morrow? Is this heaps stronger? cheers

Re: Cracked hull

Resin isn't much good without the cloth to hold it together. Kinda like when steel mesh is used in a concrete pad. I'd suggest drilling a small hole at each end of the crack to terminate the fracture, then apply your mesh and resin. Of course sand the area first to remove contaminates and promote adhesion. You have a very cool boat so don't sink it as I wanna see it after the refit. P.S. I miss Australia.

Re: Cracked hull

If possiable patch the hull on the inside with resin and mat, then cosmedicly do the outside. If you can't you must grind out a portion of the outside to hold mat and resin, about a 10 to 1 taper for good bond---Bob

Re: Cracked hull

If you wants the resin to stay on the patch you need to grind with atleast 40grit paper. Grind enough away so that the patch will not protrude above the surface, and at least 5cm to either side of crack. Don't forget the fiberglass. Chief

Re: Cracked hull

if your stringers are rotted away, your hull is
flexing and causing stress cracks... no amount
of fibreglass or patching will fix it and it can
be v. dangerous.
be careful, stay close to shore and wear yur
lifejackets!

Hey Mark, there's alot of thing you don't know about this place, including our seaport...seems like every other measuring device I have has the metric side to it so being as the question was asked in oztralian I answered in metric, that is what they talk there, ain't it?...Chief :)

Hold on there a moment.

You can fix the crack by grinding around it a bit and then laying down glass but that doesn't do anything to fix the reason it cracked.

Also, stop holes don't work in glass. They work great in metal but that is because metal fatigues whereas glass tears across a span and the stress that causes fatigue in metal simply continues beyond the hole if its in glass - essentially the good strands of the glass transport the stress right around the stop-holes and begin the crack again on the other side.

The only way to stop cracks is get to the source. That often requires something as simple as glassing in some sort of support, sometimes glueing an errent stringer or bulkhead back down, sometimes building some sort of strengthing structure. The point is you have to do that sort of thing first if you want the patch to hold.

Thom

Re: Cracked hull

i sort of knew that. Im hoping the stringers are ok, i'll find out when i pull the floor next month. I does look like the previous owner ran a-ground because its cracked where he did a ****ty repair job previously. Which makes me believe that maybe he took water, going by this water may have sat in the hull and rotted stringers anyway. cheers

Re: Cracked hull

i'd just like to update this thread. I repaired the two cracks with fiberglass cloth and resin. Took it out today and NO cracks. So the job is done. Thanks all.

cheers

Re: Cracked hull

Sorry to say this tengals... but "cloth" is not a repair worthy material. If you bought this kit with glass and resin together in a box ( ie Evercoat repair kit ) then the repair will not hold. If you have any extra material..wet out your cloth..let it harden..then try to rip it up like a piece of paper.

You need to grind out the repair..acetone clean it..use fiberglass mat for the repair.
