The problems I have been having getting a steering wheel...

I have a more contemporary style 4 spoke wheel wigh a large square center hub on the MFG, I think it is a Teleflex wheel. I wanted to get a 60's style wheel, specifically a 60's MFG 3 spoke wheel. But the MFG wheels and any 60's wheels off e-bay are either too messed up or too expensive (don't you hate it when people think old junk is priceless) to justify buying. To compound the problem, my current wheel is 13" and I mounted the guages in the dash so they would be visable with the 13" wheel, but the old wheels are generally 16" wheels. So they will cover the guages. I was getting very frustrated with my plight.

I started looking at new wheels, but they are almost all contemporary style wheels that will not match the classic style of the MFG. I finally found a simple 3 spoke wheel by Ultra Flex in 13". And it was under $20 new. So I went to the UltraFlex website and it shows the wheel in WHITE and Black and Grey. I almost wet my pants over the white one. So I start looking in the boat suppliers like iBoats and others for the wheel. I find lots of them in Black and Grey, but no white. I call around and the retailers tell me that they don't have it in stock and can't get it. So I call Ultra Flex, and (gasp!) they say it is DISCONTINUED! OH CR*P! Can anything be more frustrating????

So, I check on e-bay, and there is one for sale, but I can't tell from the pic if it is white or grey. Kinda looks like grey, so I shoot them off a e-mail asking what color it is. While I wait for a response, I call one more retailer who tells me the same story about being discontinued, but he has them in black. I ask, "Can you please check and see if you have any old stock left in white?" Sure enough, he has one left! I snap it up for $18, brand new in box for less than the e-bay item! Retailer says it will be in the mail today.

So I am one happy camper. It's not a big deal, it's only a $18 "thermoplastic, antishock material" (read hard plastic) wheel. But it has the right look, it is the right size, it is the right COLOR, and it's what I wanted.

Yessirrree... I am feeling mighty good right now, might even kiss the wife when I get home. :D

This is the wheel in grey, I can't find a photo in white to link to. Wonder why

Should look better with the white interior than the the black wheel in this pic

I also like the ultraflex wheels. I really wanted the Vulcano and guess what? There is only 1 seller I know that has 1 and its not exactly what I want but will look good. Makes you mad to see all the wheels on the Uflex site and cannot get the 1 you want! But the wife likes this 1 so guess what? never mind you already know. :)

Snapperbait, thanks for the comments. I guess I'm sort of counting the chickens before their hatched, but when the wheel comes next week if it is not white, I'm gonna be 'disturbed'.

Realgun, Ultraflex does make some really cool wheels. If I ever get a more contemporary boat, I could see my way clear to spend a few bucks on a custom whee. If you call a retailer of Ultraflex, they should place an order for the wheel you want. May have to wait two weeks or so, but if it is in the USA they will get it with their next delivery. I think Uflex is an Italian manufacturer.

I like this new mahogany wheel.

Update: Realgun, I still have the notes from searching for my wheel this afternoon. The guy at Boaters World (866 993 7373) said he didn't have my wheel in white, but called the distributor to see what the story was. He was willing to order what I wanted from Uflex. If you can't find a retailer that has the wheel you want, this guy wants your business. Sorry but I can read his name or I'd give it.

Mark you are the man.
This guy Has the wheel I am looking for(Vulcano) but was a rude NY person on the phone when I asked him about the wheel I truly wanted (same wheel diffent color combo). Said and I quote, "If it ain't on the website we don't have it." Then he hung up.
He did not even want my business.
What I wanted was the Black wheel Vulcano with silver spokes.
But the more I look at the wheel above the more I wants it!My Precious. LOL

I will call boaters on Monday to see what they can do for me.

Oh BTW yes Uflex or Ultra flex is Italian MFG. I know because the Steering Rack and the Trottle have "Made in Italy" all over them and the Instructions are in Italian and English.

The wife just informed me until I get a working boat no wheel. :(

That may be a while! Just more incentive to finish.
The only reason I need a wheel is the DINO that came on the boat has a hub that I cracked a small piece out of and cannot get a replacement. Its still usable just bugs me. Most people will think that where the screwdriver goes to release the wheel. Also I cannot get it off the old shaft. I will need to borrow, darn it, a wheel puller.
Just a heads up.

I give up.

As best as I can recall DINO was a Flintstones character, but I don't think it applies to your boat.

What is a DINO?

Please?

Dino is written on the old wheel. And it is also made in Italy. Thats what is written on the back of the bottom spoke. Google Dino and steering wheel they stil make them For cars I think mostly.

Wasn't Dino one of Frank Sinatra's drinking buddies?

:)

Funny thing is, Realgun (or should I say Gollum?), it's Simplicity that is sending me the wheel! I bet we spoke to different people there, 'cause the man I dealt with was very helpful.

No I just love the book the movie is ok as it did not follow the book the way it should have.

I called a guy in NY. not FL. He even had that crapy accent. :)
Your correct it was not Simplicity Marine and that guy had the other wheel that I might consider but really want the Vulcano by Uflex to go with all the other Uflex products.

Whats wrong with the Uflex V60 Antiqua? Its white. :D

I was behind the UPS truck on my street going home yesterday. Man I was so excited. Thought for sure my wheel was in that truck. But he didn't turn in my driveway! :(

Maybe the new wheel will come today.

I don't need a new wheel, I have an 89 Raven Runabout. After looking at the mahogany wheel, and the one "realgun" had posted...those look sweet! Can any wheel go on any boat, or do you need one specificly for your boat? Like I said I don't need a new one, but I am now going to grab a new one!!! I can tell the wife its an early birthday present. Oh wait I think I am using that one already with my new GPS.

Its because the white ones have been discontinued. Maybe they should have mentioned that.

Sorry! Couldn't resist!

That really will look sharp. Nice job. And way to hang in there for something you really want instead of settling for less.

Mark don't you have a tracking number. The deliver date is usually pretty good! And I really hope you get a white 1.

Shane most boats have a 3/4" tapered shaft so almost any wheel will work. the trick is getting the old one off. A gear puller works well as does a sawzall and a hammer. :D I only recomend that method if your gonna replace the helm.

Hey! My wheel came. Its white, it's got nice comfortable finger "bumpy things" on the back of the wheel, and it's the right size.

It look just like the grey one at the top of the post, just in nice bright white.

It's gonna look great.

I'm happy. :D
