Bondo - I suspect we may have a misunderstanding here.
Ayuh,......... That I'll agree with......
And,... Before I go any further,......

I Apologize to Anyone Offended by My posts on this thread .........
I didn't learn this from a web page,... But from real life experince..........
That's Not meant to imply Anything about You....It's No Doubt a Great Thing to do, adding links to prove a point......
That's just My way of saying that I'm Not an Engineer,...
I Don't Crunch the #s,+ Then set out to Build something.......
I go ahead,+ Build things with what I have available,+ Hope for the Expected Outcome......
Usually,... Things Work... Sometimes NOT.....
I originally took issue with Realgun's post because he seemed to imply to me that the web material was the primary load carrying part of a wooden I-joist, and the purpose of the flanges were entirely secondary. He seemed to confirm this with his second post.
Well,...........The way I see it,..... This is Where we wandered Off Topic..................

The Topic is about Creating Strength, With Engineered Structure.......Stringers in particular..........

In RealGun's 1st post he used the Lama-Beams as an example.....And, It Is a Pretty Good Analogy...
Except,... The Flanges are in reality, the Hull,+ the Floor of the boat............

Now,..... Keeping in mind that we're talking about Boat Stringers,.....
You advocated that it's Fine to remove up to 95% of the Web, with No Loss of Strength........That's Just Not So........
The Web is the Only part of the Structure that we have to work with.... Drilling access holes in a stringer is 1 thing..... Removing the amount of material that You say is just Fine,..... Will Not Work......

I stated this earlier,
BillP is Right, We're not using I beams in our boats,.. But,... We Are creating Structure, By glueing the Stringers to the Hull, Then adding a couple of Bulkhead pc.s,+ Glueing,+/or Screwing the Floor to the tops of the Stringers......
We've created several Boxes, hence Strength thru Structure..................
looking back,........ The wooden I-beam may not have been the Best Example.........

But,.. It does show How to build Strength with Structure .........

Again,...... No Ill Will meant for Anybody.... I'm Sorry......

Bondo did you take a happy pill again? :D

I like that Deck and hull are part of the structure. I never thought about that!

Bondo, I should be 100% clear about this: you have not offended me at all, and I in no way feel offended. We're having a discussion about structures and such, and there's no way that will ever offend me. At least until you start telling me where I can put those structures. :D

Second, if I ever advocated that removing most the web would result in no loss of strengh then I certainly agree I am wrong. Now I'll argue that I never said such a thing, and I know that I never ment such a thing, but what does that matter anyway?

I stand by my post. If you look at that link a little further down you'll see a table that shows a 6.25" allowable hole through a 9.5" joist, as long as I cut it somewhere near the centre of the span. If you subtract the 3" of flange material (1.5" top and bottom) than that leaves you with a .25" remainder of web material.
OK,....................................... :D

"but what does that matter anyway? "
Not a Danm Thing.......... ;)
Except, Some people Might think it's Alright to do to a Stringer.........

Point taken.

I still claim I never said that cutting a large diameter hole wouldn't weaken the I-beam somewhat, but I agree I didn't underscore that fact either.
Afterall, it didn't help my argument at all. :)

I am going back to tried and proven fibreglass wrapped balsa stringers. Even if I am not wrapped to tight. :)

Who uses balsa for stringers? It has little strength compared to plank pine/spruce or ply.

This has been a fun thread. In the end, ply stringers, encased and bonded properly to the hull and floor gives the best structure, strength and weight, for trailerable boats. Stacked and glued dimensional lumber just adds weight. It would be like using steel in aircraft, too much weight and not enough benefit. Good luck....

I've been accused of Worse.... But, In your case RP,.. I Think you'll be Hard Press to find Anybody to Argue Your Point........ :D

The Only boat I've Ever seen with Balsa Stringers was a R/C Model, about 18" long.............. ;)
