Re: Prop Results

The #s just dont mach up. Not doubting you, just seems screwy. You went 4 #s up on pitch and still turning the same RPMs??????????????
-----------------------------
Almost Sounds like the prop pitch numbers are backward...

Re: Prop Results

From what I'm reading ,the RPM's went down with the higher pitch prop, which is normal, but it should have dorpped about 400-600 rpm by the jump you made. The RPM range for your motor is 5250-5750 if I am correct, so a 19 or 20 pitch would be about perfect.

I guess it all depends on how you look at, "just over", and "just shy".
-------------------------------
Re: Prop Results

I got interrupted and didn't complete the post as I wanted.

Last year, my brand new boat with a 90 HP Merc on a 1200 lbs. bowrider (Cutter) came with a 17" prop. Great for skiing and amazing hole shot.

Problem was, it easily exceeded the 5500 max RPM range even when loaded with 5 or 6 adults.

The boat is designed more a as ski boat with the ski pole etc. So I saw the dealer's point supplying the 17 ".

I don't have a GPS so the max I got was 47 MPH on the boat speed. This was with me not doing WOT.

I tried WOT once and when it got to 6000, I stopped. I only hit 6K for a few seconds.

My debate was to go to a 19" or 21". The specs on the Bayliner 16' boat are almost identical to mine. Weight is the same but I have a chined hull.

They ship with a 21" prop. So figured that if I could easily turn 6K the 19" may still be too low. So I opted for the 21", thinking I may still have to go down to the 19".

Well yesterday, after a lot of delay this year, I put the boat in the water for season (I keep it in the water at the cottage). They guys came up to spend the nite and we put the boat in the water.

Hole shot is not as good. I expected this. I'm up on plane with 4 strapping lads (I figure about 800 lbs. of human cargo) in under 8 seconds.

At WOT, I was turning 5400 RPM and my speedo registered 51 MPH.

Today, I went out alone. Hole shot was better (obviously). At WOT, I got just over 5500 and looked like about 52 MPH.

I think my speed is over stating speed. But it is evident that I've gained about 5 MPH.

My biggest relief is that I don't have to worry about exceeding WOT, especially when some of the boys take the boat out.

Now I have an extra prop....

I do think that for overal performance, the dealer should have shipped the boat with a 19" prop.

Thanks to all the discussions on this board regarding props. Certainly helped me make the right decision.....

Now, my next question, according to the max speed based on pitch, gear ration, and RPM, I should be at about 45 MPH.

Any comments?

Re: Prop Results

Sounds like your new prop came out just right, once you explained all the circumstances. Calculating the theoretical speed is inexact, at best. It all depends on how much "slip" you assign to the calculated speed. It's a guess, since all rigs vary. Can be from 10 to 15% or even higher. Anyway, things worked out for you, so everythings OK. I hate it when you spend a lot of time and money and just make things worse.
