It took long enough for a bare metal respray on the leg but it would have taken three times as long to gouge out and smooth every bit of complicated casting on the bracket. It'll fool the eye well enough. This is also the best it's ever going to look because the first time it goes out it'll drag the skeg through the sand and that'll be the start of the decline. Never took a picture of the full motor before I resprayed it but here's one of the cowl, which was in better condition than the leg.

I doubt one ever came out of the factory in these colours but it's OK for me. Went for the dark colour because this old thing drops oily sooty goop over the cav plate and prop and it looked lousy on the first respray in white.

Mate, I am going to launch this thing at every opportunity for the next four days.

The only germs where I'm going are jetskis.

Thanks for your support in the other thread. I let it go through to the keeper as things could have got off track if I'd responded to it or you there.

Now you know what my motor looks like, and as it's probably the only one that looks like it, say Hi if you see me.

Cheers.

Leg is good but cowl isn't. Every time I wanted to spray the cowl the wind came up and made it hard to get a proper coat on. Also I didn't prep it 100%, but I knew it at the time. Whatever happened it was going to look way better than before. It looks OK in normal viewing to the average person.

This is the last time I use spray cans as there's no flow control on them and they cost too much. Also guaranteed that about 10 to 20% won't work properly or will spit gobs of paint and stuff up a great job, which happened to me several times on the cowl. Used 6 cans of VHT engine enamel on the motor because there's a bit of heat in the leg. Got four of them for $20 at Super Cheap because some idiot priced them at $4.99 when they're generally around $13 to $15 each. The other two cost me $30 at Repco, whose prices are ridiculous but they had the only two cans I could find to finish the job. If I'd bought them all at the right price it would have cost me around $80. You can get the right quantity of paint tinted for around a quarter to third of that.

Decals can be made at most signwriters as they generally do vinyl signs. The one I have is a red stencil, i.e. EVINRUDE is cut out of the red vinyl, laid on white vinyl. I just gave him a print of the "before" photo above with dimensions and explained what I wanted. Cost me $44, inc GST. There's people on eBay and elsewhere on the internet who'll provide standard decals for about $10 to $20 so check them out first. I couldn't get mine off the shelf as it's too old for the mainstream signs and a touch too young to be a classic.

I stuffed up applying the decals because there are air bubbles in a few spots that I can't get out. I think you need to start smoothing them out from the centre, but you need two people for this, one holding the decal and the other applying.

Say Hi to me if you see the motor.

Cheers

Looks great. Nice job on the prep. Now put it on e-bay, you'll get top dollar. Just list it as "complete overhaul of all exterior surfaces".
:D

Edit:

Don't forget the 9.9 hp decal so you can get on those restricted hp lakes!

I was right.

A few days on the water and the bottom of the skeg is bare metal from beaching.

Can't get in among the other boats without keeping power on until just about beaching and can't haul the motor up in time to avoid grounding it.

I need a power tilt!

Still, it attracted some positive comments from the ramp watchers.
