I have been placed on a comitte to buy a boat and or outboard motor for the Bolivar County Emergency Operations Unit. We do anything from rescuing stranded boaters to storm spotting to evidence collection for the sherriffs department. We also do recovery work for drowned victims. We currently have a old 18' Polarcraft Cab boat with a 120 hp Johnson (not sure of year). We have had good service out of both but the motor has taken its tole on the transome. WE have been awarded a grant to purchase a new rig.

Do any of you have any suggestions, comments or opinions as to what we need or should get???

thanks..

Re: Buying an Outboard

Well, it's sometimes going to be raining, cold or both when you're out in it, so I would suggest something with a hardtop to get under. Those hours out their searching get long after a while, particularly when you're cold and wet. The kind of rig, size, etc. depend largely on how much the grant is for. Generally. the bigger the boat, the more comfortable but they can't go as shallow as you sometimes need to, either. I think definitely an outboard with PT&T so you can trim it up when you have to get in shallower water or beach it. Plenty of alternator and batteries for spotlights, radios, etc. How did the 18" do? Did it generally get into the places you needed to get to?

Please do not post the same question in two sections of of this site - we get confused enough as it is.

Hey poolshark,

Boat - A tinny. You can beat the hell out of an aluminium boat and it's a lot lighter than a GRP boat. Polycraft a good as well.

Motor - Tohatsu. They are very good, very reliable and cheap to repair and maintain. A very very good work motor.

Check out Sea Ark Boats, they make good, heavy duty, private and commercial quality aluminum boats, and they'll fit it out with or without an enclosed cabin, most any kind of configuration you need. Sea Ark also has a military type patrol boat division for folks who really want to get serious. Most of their aluminum hulls are 125" thick, jon boats up to 25' long. Good Luck!
