Uncovered the boat today and brought it up to the driveway to do some work. Put on the new Uflex white steering wheel I got over the winter. Realgun, I know you've been waiting for this so I'll get right to it. :)

Here is the old black wheel.

Here is the new Uflex white wheel mounted so a spoke is straight up when going straight.

And here is the wheel mounted spoke down when going straight. Think I like this orientation better.

Hey Mark, It looks awsome. If I didn't have the original wheel I would definately do mine like that.

Suits the color scheme of your boat perfectly. Three thumbs-up!! I'd agree that the second photo provides the best orientation. Leaves the top free, much like most automobile arrangements.

Finally you got off your duff. :) Your right it looks nice and I think those wheels were closer to original than the wheel on the boat.

Looks great - much better than what you started with! My vote is for #3 (spoke-down) too.

Re: New Steering Wheel - w/photos.

Mark,
I have started on my traveler. Posted pics a while back. Have a qusetion about steering. My boat is 13'6" and had old cable streering. I want to install a new single cable system, but not real sure about them. I have a 1970 18HP Evinrude outboard with the old pulley cable adapter bracket. I do not know which system to use. Any advice? Also the Comet/scrubbie pad idea was great thank you.

Re: New Steering Wheel - w/photos.

ronrhodes,

With the 18 hp all that is needed is a basic system. Used to be the Teleflex Safe T Quick Connect rotary system was the standard and least expensive (that is what I have), but in the last year or so the price really came down on their rack system ($108 in the Mega Mall) so it is cheaper than the rotary. If you have the space for the rack, I would use it. Otherwise the rotary Safe T Quick Connect system is needed because it will fit in the space of the old wire wound drum. Either system will give a very good precise feel to the steering. 200% better than the wire/pully system.

I don't know if your 1970 motor has the "steering tube" built into it at the pivot point. If it does, then the cable end goes through and a link arm (about $35) is needed to connect the end of the steering cable to the motor.

If you don't have the steering tube, then there are a few extra parts you'll need to connect the new cable to the old motor. Look for Teleflex Master Kit in the mega mall:

This is a support system for the new cable, allowing it to move as the motor turns in an arc.

Search the forum on steering, there are a few pics of boats using this sysem.

Good Luck!

Mark42's got your answer ronrhodes. You're engine doesn't have a steering tube so you'll need SA27255P. You'll also need SA27198 to connect it to the 'handle':
I couln't put my finger on it, but that is probably why it looks better like that!

You can't buy this in USA anymore either. They stopped importing it in white, now just available in grey and black. I just kept calling around until I found old stock. That is luck! The basic Teleflex wheel is available in white. A little more contemporary and around 13". I couldn't find anything larger in a white simple 3 spoke wheel new.

Re: New Steering Wheel - w/photos.

I was looking for info on setting up a teleflex steering system in my boat, which is a 14 fiberglass with a 1963 johnnson 40 hp (no tilt tube), and I came across this post in a search. I already have the whole system, from the helm back to the transom, but I am missing all of the parts neccasary to connect the cable to the engine or mount it to the transom and this post has helped me out quite a bit in showing me the parts I need.

Here's the story and question:

I spoke with a technical help representitive at teleflex who told me that I would be missing full steering capabilities with this setup described above as the cable only extends 4 1/4 inches in each direction and this setup would be restrictive in that manner. He also said that I could get a link arm from the engine manufacturer to allow full steering capabilities. Instead of using the clevis I could just hook up the cable directly to the link. But he did not explain how. If the cable only moves 4 1/4 inches in either direction, then how would adding an extension allow it to move further? That does not make sense to me. It would only make it harder, if not immpossible to fit the cable to allow it to reach the motor without the link arm passing by it by a foot or so, since I would have to attach the clamp mount on my transom next to the motor.

If anyone has any idea's or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I have asked so many different sources about this whole setup and nobody seems to know what to say or excactly how it works.

Re: New Steering Wheel - w/photos.

Hi Taunce!

I happen to have my boat in the garage so I went out and measured a few things.

1) The total throw of the cable is 7" as mounted in the steering tube and connected to the motor using the link arm.

2) The length of the radius from the center of the motors pivot point to where the link arm attaches is 8 1/4 inches.

If you were to take kit SA27255P and mount the bracket so that the tube is centered in front of the motor and as close to top of the transom as possable (simulating the location of the steering tube built into new motors), then the Link Arm is needed to connect the cable to the motor.

If you were to mount the kit beside the motor you might be able to arrange it so the end of the cable bolts directly to the motor.

Look at the attachment point of your motor and measure the distance from the pivot point to the attachment point. If this is 8" or so, then you know that there is enough throw in the cable to move the motor in its full arc. The longer the distance, the less the motor will rotate on the same 7 1/4" throw of the cable.

You may have to fabricat a connection using some heim joints, but you should be able to get that kit to work for you.

This picture shows how NOT to use the kit. The problem here is the previous owner had the tube rigidly mounted so it couldn't move with the motor and things would bind and come loose.

This picture shows what you are trying to simulate. If you can bolt the tube to the transom in as close a location as the built in is, then using the link arm will be all you need to make it work.

DSCF0301s.jpg

If you keep searching, there are pictures of the kit being properly used somewhere on this forum.

Hope this helps.

Mark
