I am in the process or repairing an older IMP fiberglass boat. I have repaired a large crack and several smaller cracks in the hull and re-glassed the entire deck (over plywood). I used West system's epoxy for both applications. I put a final skimcoat of West system epoxy over all areas. To finish the hull, do i need to use a gelcoat, or a bottom paint? Can I use a topside paint for the deck and skip the gelcoat? Last question, If i can use topside paint on the deck, is it recomended I repaint the entire top side over the existing gelcoat to match color? The boat will be used in freshwater only.

Gelcoat is a poly resin, chances are it will not stick to epoxy resin.Paint, paint and more paint, top(all)and bottom.

Actually thats a falisy. If the epoxy is cured and sanded the gelcoat will stick just fine. West did a test with their evercoar gel and it held up very well. They said it was all in the prep before the gelcoat was applied.

Public boat fixer, going to scuff and clean the epoxy so the poly will get a "bite". I also read the article, under laboratory controlled conditions, they done the test, I was impressed with the long term, [9 weeks] factor where the bond appeared stronger.

Maybe this is the reason the epoxy sellers has been on the cautious side, and told people not to put poly on epoxy. Who knows.

Not to hijack but I would really like to discuss this further as I am in a similar situation. I was dead set on having my boat re-gel coated but after talking to some folks they have said its a bad idea. I am only talking about an eight to 10inch stripe above the waterline on a 26ft. Is paint the answer or gel coat? Im looking for the best possible results regardless of labor and materials

Re: Re-paint or re- gelcoat?

project hunter:
Lets talk paint, I started spraying in 1973 and have been doing it off and on since then, over the years the product has changed and changed.
Where it is no longer chalk with a vehicle [thinner]but a high tech. plastic coating. From the frozen north to sand and dust storms out your way, it holds up. Three hundred and 65 days per year exposed to all types of weather it takes a beating. Yet with twice a year waxing , after 10 years of abuse it can still look good.
GM was the first Co. to use robot painters, the amount of paint is computer controlled and it is thin, yet the paint holds up. Also the Hatteras Yacht known the world over, is painted.

Gelcoat has been applied to the molds since the first FRP boat was made in the 60's. Why... its cheaper to do that way on production boats. Suppose Hunter Boat works made the boat in the mold, took it out sanded it down, cleaned it took it to the paint booth painted it, waited 3 days for it to get dry before they could start putting it together.
Lancer Boat works, waxed the mold, sprayed gelcoat, and before the day was over, finished laying the glass and plastic, next morning popped it out of the mold and started putting it together which company is going to have the finished product out the door quickest?

I have read all the B/S about not painting a boat because someone done a half/a$$ job, and blamed the paint, and it fell off, and it didn't dry right, and all of the other excuses for poor prep. and workmanship. In my opinion the new coating systems[paint]will hold up better than gelcoat, and a heck of a lot cheaper to repair.

What is better Imron or Awlgrip or is there something that you prefer. After talking with numerous folks Im starting to take the paint direction. I had a boat painted by a body shop with urethan paint and it chipped and cracked so I think thats what has made me so pro gel coat. Thanks for your help cclancer and the years of experience that always make the diference

Re: Re-paint or re- gelcoat?

Hello, I am by no means a pro at all of this. All I know is that I have an old 74 tri-hull Slickcraft, it was painted by an guy that does not know what sand paper is. And so the paint is fallin off in the trailer roller area of my hull. So I decided to take the paint off and restore the gel. After talking with a pro glass man. I have takin some 220 grit and a DA, went down to the gel, then use 800 grit. Followed by a rub down with 00000/steel wool, and finally buffed out with 3M's Perfect-It III extra cut rubbing compound. The hull looks like a new boat, and I mean very glossy. The process sound like alot but really not that bad once I had the right tools (and the advice from my pro Glass buddy) Either way have fun.

That Sounds like Bad Work,.... Not Bad Paint.......

I Swear by the 2pt. Ureathanes.........
I've been using MSU from NAPA for Years......
Great Stuff......

But,... As stated above,..... Preparation IS the Key to Great Results.........

Re: Re-paint or re- gelcoat?

I sell and do tech service for a very large gel coat company. Paint it, it's far easier and will hold up much better. prep is the key, neither method will hold up if the prep is not done correctly. I would never recommend gel coat being applied over epoxy, I have never seen it bond well.

Re: Re-paint or re- gelcoat?

Gelcoat is made to be shot into a Mold, as the 1st step in boat building......

It Doesn't cure well when exposed to the Air......

Yes,..... It Can be used in ways Other Than the way it's Designed to work,.......
But,... The Added Effort is NO Way Worth the Implied Benefit.................

It you Smack the Dock,.... Either, or Both Will Scratch..........

Preperation is Nearly the Same for Both,........

The Work Needed After the shoot is Atleast Twice as much for the Gelcoat than it is for Paint............
