CalicoKid noted in one of the above posts that my motor had tilt and trim, but I didn't know it.
There are a few "mystery switches" behind the dash: two are cylindrical twist switches, and one is a big button. None are marked, though. The controls have an ignition switch and one button. There is also a push-pull switch on the dash, to the right of the steering wheel. When pulled, it feels like a multi-position switch.
Tell me where to look on my motor to identify the power tilt and trim. Man, I need a picture to understand this!
Yes, I see on your photo3 page that the adjustment pin looks like it's in the full down/in position. This is not unusual for an engine with PTT. But... I'm not at all familiar with outboards of this vintage so I can't help you. My wild guess is that those large red cylinders might be it? A typical outboard will have electrical wiring going into the engine that probably carries the tach signal and another for the circuit from the key to the starter. Other than that, at the engine itself, you probably only have the throttle cable. Other wires, tubes and cables going back there will be for stuff like a speedo and , if you see any other electrical wires going to somewhere in the vicinity of the engine, but down by the mounting bracket as opposed to the engine itself, they might control a PTT. You might be able to troubleshoot and repair if needed from there. But again, I'm only speculating about the PTT at all.

You may want to look a little closer. I don't see that motor having power tilt/trim. On the side I see red-orange shock absorbers to assist with manually raising and lowering the motor (or to soften underwater collisions).

Perhaps I don't see what other's do?

Thats a great looking boat! You'll turn lots of heads with that classic design.

Unfortunately you do not have power tilt/trim. Those "shock absorber" looking things are intended to make the motor easier to manually tilt for trailering purposes or beaching, but often times because of their age they do nothing because they are worn. I have them on my Merc 1250, and I assure you when I have to tilt that heavy beast they are of no assistance.

Re: "Before" photos of my runabout project

What I have to do with my 1250 is brace my knees on each side of the splashwell, grab the top of the motor, and let my body weight fall, which tilts the motor up. Then, in one quick motion, I have to lean forward and flip the little doohicky that keeps the motor up. Thankfully, whoever owned this rig before had rewelded the doohickey to make it a lot stronger than original. I am betting that it had broke at one time. Yeah, I fantasize about finding a t&t setup for inline sixes and swapping the parts on, but I am not in a big hurry, I'll come across a setup one day for a reasonable fee.

Re: "Before" photos of my runabout project

Having had a largish outboard in the past without PTT, I remember there was a certain technique for getting the thing up without a lot of grunting... but I was almost 20 years younger then

I've seen lever attachments that look to me like they'd aid tilting a large outboard - I'd definitely check it out were I in that position.

But at my age and size (old and small, with smaller wife and daughters), I'd spring the bucks and get an aftermarket PTT unit if I couldn't find OEM to add on. I just thank my stars that the previous owner of our current boat spent good money on both a brand new PTT unit as well as a very nice electric/hydraulic jack plate. Quite valuable, and rarely fully reflected in purchase/selling price of an older boat.

Seems like a quality boat and that motor is nice with the chrome look to it.

Re: "Before" photos of my runabout project

I had a merc 850 at one time that had the shock absorbers on each side. One day, I found an old boat sitting in weeds that once had a merc outboard on it with power tilt and trim. The motor was gone, but left were to little hydraulic cylinders and a hydraulic pump and electric dash controls. $200 bought the boat and trailer, I took the power tilt and trim off and sold the boat for $100. Then I took my shock absorbers off my merc 850 and the hydraulic cyliders slipped right on in place! That was really nice to have.
